Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

THE FLORENCE KING READER Florence King. St. Martin's, $14.95 ISBN 0-312-14337-0. Spleen-filled satire from Southern conservative and misanthrope King.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

This is an odd collection of 12 essays that deal more with the author's trying to find her place in the world than with place in the ecological sense. While some essays center around specific locations such as the northeast woods, Canada's Grand Manan island, and the Arizona desert, the feelings created seem more tied to events that happened there than with the place itself. One essay deals with the author's ideas of how poetry can help us understand nature, but only a very few examples are provided, and the essay seems rather out of tune with the others. The strongest emotion that lingers after reading is inspired by the author's attempt to deal with loss after the death of her father, causing her to consider other losses. Consider this for the social science, not the natural history, collection. Not an essential purchase.
