Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The spunky characterizations and sprightly pacing of Dain's previous novel, To Burn, are absent here, but Dain delivers on other fronts, offering protagonists who will pique readers' imaginations and an unconventional story line that plays out in 12th-century England. The first half of the novel moves like molasses as pious Elsbeth of Sunnandune, who longs for a quiet convent life, comes to terms with the fact that her calculating father has sold her in marriage to gorgeous and glib Hugh of Jerusalem. For his own purposes, Hugh is determined to make the marriage work, but Elsbeth is just as determined to prove that she's an unfit wife. Their battle of wills and words makes up the bulk of the novel and quickly grows tedious, but an element of intrigue spices up the final half, as do some tantalizing near-love scenes. The book's religious overtones may put off some readers and others will find themselves gnashing their teeth over Hugh's arrogance ("He had not yet met steel that he could not best, and so it was with the steely heart of his wife. Or would be"). However, Dain succeeds in capturing the atmosphere of the period and in creating protagonists whose fears, dreams and temperaments reflect the era.

1.0 out of 5 stars oh MY GOD!, January 2, 2004

This review is from: The Temptation (Mass Market Paperback)
This had to be the strangest romance novel I ever read, and I've read quite a few. I had, however, never read anything by Claudia Dain; I liked the look of the cover art, & the plot blurb on the back cover sounded intriguing...stupid me! Don't buy a book by its cover!! It's not that it's so badly written, but with the heroine having her period throughout the whole book (just about)...what a plot device! There's the hero's impatience to consummate the marriage, and then when her father reveals his true nature...in somewhat graphic detail...Ewww! My one-star is for a moving passage about 10 pages from the end of the book, when the heroine questions why God didn't save her from her father's attentions, and the hero responds about Christ having suffered horribly, why should his servants suffer less? I've just messed up the quote, but I think that's what the author wanted to convey all along but she couldn't get that across until the end (maybe). Anyway the rest of this book was really kind of gross. Avoid at all costs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nasty, disgusting, a complete and utter failure of a book!, January 3, 2004

I got this book as a Christmas gift from my sister L, I don't know what I did to deserve this. I thought she loved me. Claudia Dain has a preoccupation with the minstral cycle and any questions that anyone has regarding it are answered by this book. Seriously, I like the other reveiwers have read many upon many romances and just books in general. I think that I am not alone in my opion that not even James Patterson, Dean Koontz or Stephen King cannot compare with the "blood letting" in this book. I will never EVER read another book by this aurthor. The good news is if she got published there is hope for us all.

I have been reading romance novels for years and this has got to be the absolute worst "Wallbanger" I have ever run across! This was the worst waste of paper I have ever seen. Ms Dain what were you thinking? 300 pages of bloody female cycles. Yuck.... This is romantic???
