5.0 out of 5 stars Swing it, Shelby!
If you came late to Shelby, and you're looking for more of the harsh, changeable, sublime stuff you found on "I am Shelby Lynne," you owe it to yourself to check out Shelby in an earlier incarnation. I have them all, but this is my favorite. It's also nothing like her most recent work. This CD features a full-on swing orchestra with steel guitars and fiddles,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay
With that voice, don't think Shelby Lynne could put out anything that is not good. I experimented with this CD based on the reviews and found it over-produced and realize that the big band/swing genre songs like Temptation and Come a Little Closer just don't do it for me. I enjoyed some of the songs with simpler arrangements that really showcase her voice like Tell me I'm...

I have them all, but this is my favorite. It's also nothing like her most recent work. This CD features a full-on swing orchestra with steel guitars and fiddles, and Shelby's great big alto booming out over impeccable instrumentation. Get it while you can, because if you love her voice, you'll never hear it featured more beautifully than in these arrangements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Cool to be popular., July 9, 2001
This review is from: Temptation (Audio CD)
Just listen to the title cut. That's all it takes. The swing, the fiddles, the horns and the singer. It's a fusion of all the coolest parts of country and jazz, and as weird as that may sound to the uninitiated....just listen!

The song selection is great, the sound so slick and sexy you'll want your other half to hear it in bed, and the singer has a voice that goes perfectly with the cigar-smoking little red-headed hottie in the photos used in the cd artwork.

Of course if you can't abide by fast, fun, furious and sexy tunes, you can stick with your boring Faith Hill retreads of tired pop cliches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tempted to buy more than just one copy, January 13, 2000
By
This review is from: Temptation (Audio CD)
This is the best new music that I have heard in years. Shelby Lynn's style differs from all the new age stuff that I have listened to. New age music seems to surround the listener while Shelby's sound will penetrate you. Her voice has incredible range and power. Her band reminds me of Lyle Lovett's Large Band. She mixes horns, violins, piano and guitars with such artistry that every time I listen to a specific cut, I hear something new. If you like music that will literally move you then treat yourself and buy a copy. Treat your friends and buy them one too. I can't wait for her new release.

I am not a Country Music Fan. I bought this CD because I was flipping the TV Channels one night and stopped on a channel that was showing a woman singing with a band, live. - It was terrific (the song "Temptation").The TV Station? TNN!!! Swing, Big Band, Blues, Country - I couldn't believe the sound,or talent I was hearing. And totally surprised that I was watching anything on TNN! I went out and bought the CD. I am wearing out the disk I am sure. I don't own any other Country Album. What a talent, extremely versatile, great use of different musical styles combined in one song. Great for any type of day/night listening.I have shared this with many friends - all liked it whether they were Country Music fans or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good that my ex-wife stole it in the divorce., August 25, 1999

"Feeling kind of Lonely tonight" is one of the best swing songs that anyone could hope to have a chance to dance to. The whole family would dance to this on family night at the local country dance place. Ms. Lynne has a resonance that is beyond comparison, she is wonderful!

What a wonderful combination of country and jazz. Shelby (and her sister Allison Moorer) has such an awesome voice - one that makes you sit up and take notice of every word.

I don't remember hearing much about this one when it came out - which makes perfect sense because radio sure wouldn't take to something this good.

I had to laugh at the one reviewer's "Faith Hill pop clique..." comment - they nailed it right on the head. Shelby Lynne, Lyle Lovett, Kelly Willis and a thousand other artists too "good" for radio will have a welcome place here in my collection. This is what good music is about, so buy it, turn it up and enjoy one of the best CDs I've come across in quite some time.

This is western swing at its best. Shelby Lynne belts it out like no other singer can. She'll keep your toes tappin' and your spirits high with this fabulous cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Country Swing Set, June 20, 2005

With Shelby Lynne's fine new release "Suit Yourself" jamming CD changers, it's been fun to go back into her earlier recordings and find what excellent quality characterizes her recorded catalog. "Temptation" is a wonderful country swing blowout that sounds fresh 12 years after its initial release. Lynne excels on the slow weepers like "I Need A Heart to Come Home To" penned by Russell Smith & John Jarvis, "I need a sweet sweetheart like you." Jamie O'Hara's "Come A Little Closer" has his throbbing brand of country rock with a wild horn chart. My two favorites are the title track opener penned by Shelby, Jamie O'Hara & producer Brent Maher and the slow "Tell Me I'm Crazy" that allows Lynne a full emotional range with the understated chorus that opens a full-blown river of tears that'd make Patsy Cline turn up the radio. "Feelin' Kind of Lonely Tonight" was the single. "Temptation" is an excellent country swing set that bubbles with energy & verve. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm tempted, February 7, 2008
By
This review is from: Temptation (Audio CD)
I've had this CD for a long time - good thing CD's don't wear out if you take care of them, or this one would be shot I've played it so many times. Shelby has the most beautiful and seductive voice and as always I'm amazed that she's not at the top of the charts. This collection is consistently great, and stylistically different from most of her work - kind of western swing with some other flavor thrown in. I was listening to it again today, years after I got it, and voila 5 stars for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Singer, September 13, 2007

I don't understand why this woman is not a big star. It is true, she should had never recorded "Love, Shelby" the album she did with Alanis's producer. However, most of her materials are awesome and this is one of them and its great to step back and appreciate this gem of an album.

This is the album where Shelby paid tribute to "swing-country" and she does a wonderful job with the materials. This is not an easy style of music, but Shelby has the natural soul and voice to pull these songs off. Shelby's latest albums are great too...more bluesy and folky with a blend of rock and country.

Do yourself a favor and collect all her materials.
