Book Description

May 1, 2001
When Dillion Reed strolls into Janey Mayfields candy shop, the past opens up like a forbidden door. The imposing ex-marine turned high school principle is a shocking reminder of an affair that shattered all their lives.

After the scandal that destroyed two marriages, Janey fled to Colorado with her daughter. Now, three years later, she's come back to South Carolina, determined to make a success of the business she inherited and keep control of her well-orderd life. But it's an uphill battle, what with her rebellious teenage daughter, a rash of break-ins plaguing the town, and an ex-husband with a grudge.

She tells herself she doesn't want the attraction she feels for Dillion. She doesn't want to be vulnerable to what his heated glance has put on offer: sweet, irresistible passion. But Janey discovers that the more it stands in her way.

2.0 out of 5 stars Horrific dialog ruins an otherwise good storyline, March 27, 2006

This review is from: Tempting Janey (Mass Market Paperback)
Janey Mayfield has returned to the small South Carolina town she fled years before - her husband and best friend had an affair that resulted in two broken marriages. She has taken over her aunt's candy shop and is trying to make a go at it despite her husband's lack of support.

Her husband thinks he might have another chance to get her back, and even tries manipulating their daughter as a means to his ends. But Janey can't seem to discount the attraction she is feeling for widower Dillon Reed, her daughter's principal (and the husband of her former best friend). Dillon stood by his philandering wife when he discovered she had cancer and very little time left. Dillon and Janey must grapple with the decision of whether to pursue a relationship which is sure to raise some eyebrows in this small town, since the local gossips are buzzing.

In a secondary story, daughter Robin is fighting peer pressure to sleep with her popular boyfriend who may not be such a prize after all. She thinks that her mother is being too controlling, especially since her father is supportive of the relationship.

Overall, it was an interesting storyline, but the dialog is atrocious and hard to overcome - particularly that attributed to the teens - the last time I heard the line "get it on," Marvin Gaye was still alive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying read., July 15, 2001
This review is from: Tempting Janey (Mass Market Paperback)
Janey Mayfield had moved back to South Carolina with her daughter, but things started to go awry when Marine-turned-high school principal Dillon Reed stepped back into her life. They needn't have been reminded of the affair which turned their well-ordered lives upside down, but when Janey's ex-husband and daughter rebel against her in their own ways, where else does she have to turn? And where will she go from here? Mary Lynn Baxter's latest book explores characters and relationships of different levels within those characters. A reader may be disturbed toward the end of the book, but this dose of harsh reality can be what makes the story much more believable. With the combination of reality and depth, Tempting Janey can satisfy a reader well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finding love in all the wrong places, June 10, 2001

"jazzyjanny" (Bergenfield, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tempting Janey (Mass Market Paperback)
Janey Mayfield has a full plate. Returning home to run her aunt's candy shop, she is faced with an unfaithful ex who favors the bottle and wants her back; slipping sales at the candy shop; a teenage daughter who is eager to spread her wings and an elderly old friend of her aunt who is in need of care. What could be worse? Add fighting an attraction to Dillon Reed, muscular hunk, former friend and principal of her daughter's school. Dillon is the very last person Janey should be attracted to. A shared heartache binds them to the past. Dillon has his own feeings about the past to overcome but seeing Janey ignites something inside him. Will this attraction be enough to overcome the terrible past which severed their friendship?

I my opinion, Mary Lynn Baxter has been underrated as an author. I find her characters real and believable and look forward to her next contemporary romance.
