2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as her other books...
I have read about half of Jude Deveraux's books now - she is the only romance author I have read and I love her complex and touching plots - but have to admit that this one just doesn't compete with the others. It was okay, but the story didn't click in various areas: romance was questionable, intricacies of the plot were sometimes confusing and inconsistent, and the end...

This book was really good. It kept my interest and I couldn't stop until I'd read it all in one sitting.

Christina Montgomery Mathison a.k.a. Nora Dallas, the world renowned reporter, is spirited away from the home of Hugh Lanier by two young men. One man is named Asher Prescott and one is Tynan, the most handsome man Chris has ever seen. This begins an adventure lasting several weeks.

Some of the adventure takes place in the decidious rain forest of Washington state. The descriptions are beautiful.

This is an exciting tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Any Deveraux fan will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I absolutely loved this book., February 26, 1999
By A Customer
I absolutely loved this book because it was exciting, adventurous, and I could not put it down. Christina, the main character, is always trying to investigate things and is always getting herself in trouble. Tynan, is the man who's never had a chance in life and has a bad name, but always comes to Christiana's rescue. I loved the independent braveness of Christina. I wish I could be more head-strong and independent like her. I would definately recommend this book to everyone. It is one of the best books I've ever read.

This review is from: Temptress (Paperback)
I have read about half of Jude Deveraux's books now - she is the only romance author I have read and I love her complex and touching plots - but have to admit that this one just doesn't compete with the others. It was okay, but the story didn't click in various areas: romance was questionable, intricacies of the plot were sometimes confusing and inconsistent, and the end was downright perplexing. How can a lady marry a man who doesn't even look at her at the altar much less stand next to her??!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun-filled adventurous romance, July 25, 2002
By

I really enjoyed this book. This story was more light-hearted than other Jude Deveraux books, but that's how some of her stories are. Some are more emotional than others. I actually laughed out loud several times while reading this book.

I really like Tynan, being the "tortured hero" that he is. He was really focused on changing his life, and not falling back into the bad habits and wild lifestyle he'd once led. How could he do that if he defied Christiana's father? This just proved to be an obstacle that made the story what it is. What's a good romance read without obstacles?

Christiana was an admirable heroine, she had a lot of spirit, and she was able to overstep the boundaries of what was deemed as socially acceptable for women of her time.

Some say this story was not believable. To me, most historical romances are not believable and are totally out of the ordinary. That's why I enjoy historical romances better than contemporaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good novel!, April 5, 2006
I say "surprisingly good" because I hadn't expected to enjoy this book after reading the bad reviews here. However, The Temptress turned out to be one fun romance full of adventure, humor and twists and turns. It is kind of different from the other Deveraux novels I have read, a somewhat cross between Twin of Ice and Temptation, but the author's signature romance, wit and twist ending are there. Christiana Montgomery-Mathison is a twenty-eight-year-old heiress making it on her own in late nineteenth century (the author doesn't mention the year, but my guess is it is set some time around the late 1880s to the mid 1890s). She is the famous, admired newspaper reporter pen-named Nola Dallas, who is known for her snooping around and risking her life for adventurous, risque exposes. But one day two men go and fetch her to bring her back to her disapproving father. One of the men is the one she feels her father wants her to marry -- a respectable man who isn't at all respectable because he is after her money. The other man is a maverick named Tynan (no last name), who was in prison for a crime he hadn't committed and who may receive a pardon if he looks after Chris throughout the journey home. He is also told by her father not to touch her if he wants his freedom back. But that may not be easy, for mutual attraction and sexual tension between them is inevitable. Will they manage to keep their hands off each other throughout the long journey home? There are many twists throughout the novel.

This novel was sort of an acquired taste for me because I wasn't crazy about the first few chapters. I thought it was boring at first, but then the story picked up when Tynan, Asher and Chris began to travel around the Washington rain forests. And the story becomes riveting after Chris decides to help an accident victim during the journey. There are so many twists and turns that I soon couldn't put the book down. The story is fun and I love how Deveraux uses the Western genre here. Tynan is gorgeous, a gunslinger and a cowboy that is as sexy as he is infuriating. He is such a man-ho and at times I wanted to hit him with a frying pan. But he is also honorable. I like how, despite his denials about loving Chris, he does everything in his power to look after her and keep her safe. The author does this in a way that ensures the reader that he does these things for far more than mere duty. He does it because he loves Chris. And I love the scenes where he becomes jealous! His love for Chris is quite transparent in spite of his protestations to the contrary. I admit that his arrogance and womanizing ways infuriated me, but I still loved this man. He is the proverbial tortured hero with more than a few insecurities. Chris is a great heroine -- someone independent, intelligent and sure of herself. She decides to pursue the man she wants in spite of his halfhearted rejections. She is the proverbial Deveraux strong heroine and I liked her a lot. I also enjoyed the secondary characters, especially Sam Dysan and Pilar. And I loved all of the references to the Montgomerys from the Velvet series. Chris is a descendant of Christiana Chatworth from Velvet Angel and even inherited her "second sight." I loved that part of this novel a great deal. Chris is a Montgomery from the mother's side instead of the father's side. And this is the first Montgomery novel Deveraux wrote after the Velvet series. Anyway, The Temptress more than exceeded my expectations and I cannot give it anything less than five stars. The other reviewers must've read a different novel from the one I read. This isn't the best Jude Deveraux novel out there, but it is still wonderful and riveting and I cannot recommend it enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not like her others, but still a good read, September 17, 2002

I have to say that when I first began to read this book, I almost immediately took a dislike to it. I am so used to the usual way that Jude writes and this was not it. Tynan and Chris have this amazing heat when he abducts her. She almost seems to enjoy his touching and caressing... That just doesn't seem realistic to me. During an abduction fear or terror would be more seemly. The characters sometimes didn't seem real and there was really not too much romance in the book. I never sensed true sexual tension between them or much love either. It had a good story plot though where action is concerned. It was a quick and easy read and I did like the ending. I'm a huge fan of Jude Deveraux's and I have never rated her below a 4... but this book really is more of a 3 to me. For classic Jude, check out her other books first such as The Princess, The Conquest, Knight in Shining Armor, etc. This one might discourage you from reading more of her.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing :(, May 2, 2001
this was my first jude devereux book. I was looking for her books everywhere when I bought it cause I was recommended to read her. It was really disappointing. The characters are shallow. I can't understand any of Chris's actions nor how suddenly in two pages the whole pieces of the story fit together. IF you're a Jude Devereux fan, plz recommend me another book of hers that would make me forget this one.My email address is m_abd_el_wahab@hotmail.com. thanks

2.0 out of 5 stars The Temptress, August 13, 2001
By
Tynan is THE man? I found the two people competing for Christiana's interest rather unconvincing and inconsistent,e.g. I find it hard to believe that Tynan (given the way he was characterized) would stay away from Christiana just because he's afraid of her father. It's not very believable. I happen to like of Deveraux's books, but I wouldn't recommend this one because of the sappy characters.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please skip this one, February 21, 2011
I never reviewed one of Jude Deveraux's books before, because usually they are so good! I loved The Heiress, The Summerhouse, Legend and the must read Remembrance. But this book was absolutely horrible an I had to warn the deveraux fans to stay away from it. It was totally unbelievable that Tynan and Chris would fall in love with each other, there was no sexual tension, believable plot or anything likable about Tynan or Chris. She falls in love with a man for no reason at all than attraction and the fact 'he is so queit'. He only wants her for sex the entire time but at the end he miraculoussly sees the ligt and still wants to marry her and even that is questionable because he can't even look at her when he says 'i do'. Again stay away from this if you love romance...
