More About the Author

Best selling author Janet Morris began writing in 1976 and has since published more than 20 novels, many co-authored with her husband Chris Morris or others. She has contributed short fiction to the shared universe fantasy series Thieves World, in which she created the Sacred Band of Stepsons, a mythical unit of ancient fighters modeled on the Sacred Band of Thebes. She created, orchestrated, and edited the Bangsian fantasy series Heroes in Hell, writing stories for the series as well as co-writing the related novel, The Little Helliad, with Chris Morris. Most of her fiction work has been in the fantasy and science fiction genres, although she has also written historical and other novels. Morris has written, contributed to, or edited several book-length works of non-fiction, as well as papers and articles on nonlethal weapons, developmental military technology and other defense and national security topics.

Tempus is a novelized collection of the original stories about Tempus and the formation of his Sacred Band. Hard to find stories are here, such as "An End to Dreaming," which introduces Tempus's sister-in-arms, Cime, and Askelon, lord for dreams...written before there was a Thieves' World series. "A Man and His God" is here as well, the much-anthologized tale that creates the Sacred Band of Stepsons and contains probably the first male/male kiss in science fiction and fantasy.

But don't buy it only for that. Buy it for the wondrous new material that gives us glimpses into the life of Nikodemos as a Bandaran adept and takes us to Bandara itself, the mystical island chain where Niko was trained in the mystery of Maat. If you love the Sacred Band of Stepsons, or just want a place to start in this multi-volume saga, then "Tempus" is the book for you.

I love this book. It has little-known stories and vignettes about the charcters from the Sacred Band; it has in-depth material on the Bandaran mystery of Maat and Niko, Tempus's partner and warrior-monk. It is tagged on Amazon with the wrong author name -- Richard Morris, rather than Janet Morris, who wrote the book. It would be nice if someone fixed it so that fans of the Sacred Band of Stepsons, Tempus and Niko, could find it.
