Book Description

A displaced young man stumbles upon a Craig’s List Want-ad that will change his life forever. He is hired to take care of an elderly man suffering from dementia. He embarks on this journey with no experience, and what expectations he has will quickly be transformed into a life altering adventure. The gentleman he is in charge of caring for, a highly respected actor from Hollywood’s Golden Era, is unaware of how the disease has taken over his life, but is supported by a caring and generous family. It is through the love and support of this amazing family that he is able to find the courage to provide the care this gentleman needs, yet also make peace with his father that deserted him seventeen years ago. This experience leads to a spiritual awakening where he can find love – and truly be loved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming October 15, 2013

I must admit I had a lot in common with the writer of this novel – a young man who takes on the care of an elderly man with dementia. I have taken care of my parents for the past seventeen years.

I can really appreciate and admire what the author went through. I admire him because he was willing to do this for someone that was not a member of his family, a total stranger.

I was pleased he found his reward as he grew to love the elder gentleman like a relative and through that love found the courage to mend his own family ties.

This is a well written book with a deep and powerful soul that rings like a crystal bell. Anyone dealing with the challenges and rewards of caregiving would find this a worthwhile read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving story about family and aging September 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful story about a young man who turns to caretaking out of sheer desperation to pay the rent. He takes a job tending to an old man who turns out to have been a movie star in his time, and is now failing, at the end of his life, suffering from Alzheimer's, his family suffering with him. It doesn't take the caretaker long to become completely involved in their lives, and the paycheck job becomes a lot more. Of course, not everyone could turn to caretaking anyway, and you realize as the story progresses that our young California skater dude protagonist isn't all that ordinary. He's got compassion, and even tenderness, as surprising to him as it is to us. This is a truly moving and compelling story, told without saccharine or self-pity, as absorbing in its inevitable events as an action thriller. I was in tears at the end. Warning, the book needs editing. It isn't carefully written in terms of grammar, spelling, etc. Apostrophes are sprinkled like confetti through the text. But if you get past that, the story itself is great. Very worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very sweet and touching book July 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
10 Acres in Malibu was a good read and it really made me think about my interactions with my own loved ones, especially family. The book lingered after I finished reading it, which speaks volumes about the author.

I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars for a very silly reason: some minor typos throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging Human Interest Story November 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The story told here shows what could happen to older friends and family and the challenges for care of those with dementia. The book quickly draws you into the story and describes the environment as though you were there observing. It clearly describes conflicts that both caregivers and family alike face in dealing with the progression of dementia. One minute the person is perfectly normal and then suddenly they become impossible to handle. It tears at you heart strings as the progression of the disease takes a loved one. I am personally facing this situation with a family member and I can relate. A great story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good inspiring story. November 19, 2012

Great book! Loved the dynamic of an old aging actor and a young gen x caregiver. The stories are written in great detail and will have your emotions jumping all over the board. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has had their lives touched by someone going through dementia or alzheimer. You really get put into the main characters shoes and can feel the roller coaster ride he went through. Definitely check this book out. Good read cover to cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reminder November 9, 2012

Accompanying the author through his journey on those 10 acres has been inspiring. In watching the story's characters and relationships evolve, I am reminded just how powerful our impact on those around us can really be, regardless of how insignificant we think our actions are. Thanks to the author for sharing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written Novella November 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a wonderful read. 10 Acres in Malibu grabs you from the beginning and is hard to put down once you get started. It has a great mix of humor and heart.

I have had little firsthand experience being along with someone later in life, the author gives an immersively intriguing portrayal of such a relationship.

This book is so real and raw and I absolutely loved it. I have been a caregiver for twenty years and I found myself relating to the main character. I am recommending this book to anyone who wants to laugh and cry. What a great read!
