I must admit I've been reading Dan's work for almost a decade now. It's unfortunate we've known each other that long now because that means we were in college that long ago. Anyways, I never thought he'd write short stories, but I'm glad he has. I've become a fan of short stories over the last couple years when finding time to read a long novel hasn't been there. Short stories are a good way of still reading fiction, but in shorter strokes when your adult life keeps calling.

The title story of this collection, Ten Bucks If You Hit One, hit home (no pun intended) the most for me, because I was slightly a part of it. I was at the beach party described in it, because I lived at the house throwing it. We were young and wanted to have fun with our friends without real life intruding on our college experiences. I didn't find out what happened until Dan sent me an early copy of this story what had really happened. It gave the night a new color. It was still fun, but it was fun in a college way. Life has a habit of making you older beyond your years at times. This was one of those times for Dan, and he writes about it eloquently in this story. Even if you weren't there then, you'll feel like you were. Read it.

My other favorite story in this collection is called "Running With The Second Hand", which is about a teacher. Dan was one of those before and he sheds light on a position we all have to interact with, but never see the behind the curtain of. Even though it's a work of fiction I think Dan's days as a teacher influenced this story at least somewhat.

Overall I really enjoyed this collection and I hope Dan writes another. Maybe I'll go bug him about right now.

I picked up a copy of Ten Bucks If you Hit One, after I had read Dan Cavallari's outstanding novel, Confusing the Seasons. From reading this work, I knew that the author has an adept writing style that transports the reader underneath the story and into the psyche of the characters. The nine short stories that make up this collection continues to showcase his ability to write at the psyche level without losing sight or touch of the overall narrative, setting or story line.

An author's collection of short stories is not unlike a musician's album. Each track must be able to stand alone, but when viewed together they should become more than a collection of songs. In this case, the stories within Ten Bucks If you Hit One do stand on their own merits. From the powerful and deeply poignant tittle story about a beloved grandfather named Muzzy and a young man coming to terms with his own life, to the entertaining and lighthearted The Day Captain Picard Kicked My Ass, each of Dan Cavallari's stories are their own work. Running With The Second Hand could easily be turned into a first class mini drama screen play and Tom's Sweaty Headphones could have been written out of my own mind, if it was as talented as Cavallari's.

This collection of short stories will work for anyone who has taken the time to look back and remember what it was like for them growing up in a town like Waterbury, Connecticut and why those simple pleasures of childhood remain with us as powerful reminders of who we are and where we are from, regardless of where we are now. Like a great album, there is not a stinker in the bunch. I think that Muzzy would have liked that.

Dan Cavallari has hit a home run with these stories, but don't take my word for it. Spend $.99 for the Kindle version and find out for yourself.

Reading this collection of short stories reminds me once again how talented Dan is . The story about his grandfather touched me in a way that no memory could because this was my heritage. Each story in the collection has its own distinctive energy and meaning. Ten Bucks If You Hit one went straight to my heart.
