This review is from: Ten Commandments (Audio CD)
This is my all-time favorite Malevolent release. I can't understand why it's taken so long for a record company to re-release this masterpiece. It's without question one of the strongest, and most brutal Death Metal efforts ever released in the early 90's....

This is also without question one of the best Death Metal bands to come out of Florida as well, along with the likes of Obituary and Death, Malevolent were certainly one of the best. These guys are from Ft. Lauderdale, and that's my hometown, so I consider myself very familiar with the best that Death Metal has to offer. "The Ten Commandments" is certainly worthy of top status.....

Don't let this classic masterpiece slip through your fingers. I'm not sure how long this will be available considering it's been out of print for years since now, so buy it any time you get a chance. You wont regret it one bit...

BUY IT WITH CONFIDENCE!!!

The Ten Commandments Rules!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, November 15, 2000
This review is from: Ten Commandments (Audio CD)
MALEVOLENT CREATION's first album THE TEN COMMANDMENTS took the metal world by storm in 1991. it is without a doubt one of the top 10 classic metal albums of all time. all of MALEVOLENTs albums are classics, but what seperates this one from the rest is the way the band presents themselves as an original outfit. the vocals are very unique...an extreme deathy growl with a hint of melody and even a little bit of rhythm...i dont want to say rap, but you'll know what i mean when you hear "multiple stab wounds". brett hoffman's lyrics were obviously precisly planned and well crafted. not to disrespect his latest efforts, because they are sick as hell, but brett has since dismissed his unique style and has not equalled it since for reasons that i cant provide details for. the musicianship of course is amazing and the songs are catchy and memorable...standout tracks are "premature burial" "thou shall kill!", "decadence within" "remnants of withered decay", and the above mentioned "multiple stab wounds". the drums stand out for being tight and well executed. what keeps it from being five-stars? this album is quiet and very hissy...and is in dire need of being re-mastered...

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the most solid and consistent first generation death metal albums, August 6, 2007
By
This review is from: Ten Commandments (Audio CD)
During the earlier days of death metal, before the sound of the scene became more uniform and less inventive, there were bands who did sound largely different from each other. Enter: Malevolent Creation. Although originally from Buffalo, NY the band wisely decided to relocate to the Ft. Lauderdale area. Malevolent Creation did occupy a lower tier on the Florida death metal radar, but their first two albums weathered time far better than quite a bit of their competition at the time and had a few tricks the other bands didn't have. The first thing that is striking about MC is that Brett Hoffmann's vocals are perfectly intelligible unlike most death/grind vocalists who make it a point of not being understood. As a plus, Hoffmann sounds incredibly convincing and that only adds to the aura of the music! One of the few death metal vocalists I could actually say I like in his own possessed sounding throaty mid-range style. The Phil Fasciana (more so than) Jeff Juszkiewicz guitar-team comes up with some pretty cool licks that are played at varying speeds and techniques. Something you don't find often enough in death metal. Jason Blachowicz's bass performance isn't the most stunning (some cool slides on "Thou Shall Kill!"), but it is thoroughly audible thru the entire production and helps round out the bottom end of the production. Mark Simpson's drum performance is nice because he doesn't constantly play everything on top of each other. In other words, he uses space quite well and has the ability to change-up and offer alternate tempos or same-tempo-different-drum-patterns at the drop of a hat.

What makes the album even better is that all the band members know their own limitations and they keep things interesting through inventive yet simple song writing. Everyone knows their place here and doesn't try to offer more or less. This is one of those metal albums that is great as an album. It's not great for any particular song (with the possible exception of "Thou Shall Kill!"), but remains great as a whole. It's one of the few death metal albums I'll listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars My second-favorite MC album..., June 28, 2007
This review is from: Ten Commandments (Audio CD)
First off, to set the record straight, the reviewer below incorrectly stated the drummer is Dave Culross on this one, it's actually Mark Simpson.

With that said, I know everyone wonders "Why not 4 stars?" The drumming on this album is horrific, but it honestly fits the songs perfectly. I really do enjoy this album. The only gripe is, Simpson doesn't use "blast beats", he more or less hits both the drum pedals with the snare, so it just doesn't sound right; however, again, it fits the music perfectly.

The production on this album is solid considering the date it was created. I love this album, and I still remember the first time I heard "Sacrificial Annihilation". I couldn't tell it was Brett Hoffman. I had heard "Envenomed" first.

I think this is one of the few albums where the intro track actually fills it up and leads it nicely.

Get this classic, it's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A killer debut album., March 25, 2007
This review is from: Ten Commandments (Audio CD)
Wow what a great debut album from Malevolent Creation, The Ten Commandments became one of the most brutal and unrelenting death metal releases of the early 90's. Brett Hoffman delivers some viscous and scorching vocals you'll deffenitely feel the hatred and anger in his voice especially in songs like Multiple stab wounds and Impaled Existence where his voice gets electronicaly distorted to sound more evil during the middle of the song not to mention the awesome solo from Phil and great drumming from Dave Colross, the entire band shows alot of technical proficiency and speed on this album with classic songs like Impaled Existence, Multiple stab wound, thou shall kill ect. the whole album's great. The production on this album was quite good and as mentioned by other reviewers it was done by Scott Burns who is very well known among the heavy metal community, this album is very dark and morbid and makes other death metal groups seem pathetic in comparison it addreses topics like dismemberment, torture, the occult and human sacrifice and what makes it more effective is the tortured but clear vocals so you could hear what Brett Hofman is singing about, one of my favorite songs Decadence within he says "why doesn't god hear you PRAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!" as hes imaganing mutilating his victim which is a very scary thought and then the last track Molevolent creation which has got to be one of the best death metal songs ever Brett lets out a huge scream this track is completely devastating and has some thunder and lightning sound fx and nice guitar riffs. This is a true death metal classic from this highly underrated band the follow up release Retribution was just as good so make sure you get both of these albums before they run out of stock on Amazon, this is actually a shame cause Malevolent's entire catalogue should be re-released they have some great stuff that more fans should listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fred Dursts Numba One Fann = Scum, May 19, 2005
This review is from: Ten Commandments (Audio CD)
This pathetic idiot doesn't know about true music, obviously. He said this: "Look people, listen to all the good innovative bands that get no exposure, those killer technical bands are Limp Bizzkit, KoRn, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Disturbed, Papa Roach, Staind, Drowning Pool, Mushroomhead, Endo, Nonpoint, Shuvel, E-Town Concrete, Blink 182, Green Day, Good Sharlit, Simple Plan and the intelligent yet brutal Green Day!!" Most of those bands get a LOT of exposure (I do listen to some of them, except for Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and those 4 other poser punk bands listed), and he recommended Green Day twice! I hate Green Day now.

Now that I took care of that, I'll get to the CD. I don't own this, as it is out of print, but I have the best of Malevolent Creation (the one Roadrunner issued out) and enjoyed many of the songs on there. "Sacrificial Annihilation" is the title track on this rarity, and the 5 second bass solo is addicting at about 20 seconds throughout the track. This is my favorite song off there. I also enjoy "Multiple Stab Wounds", "Premature Burial" and "Remnants Of Withered Decay" as well. This CD stands out from other death metal releases, because the vocals are cleaner and you can follow along with it more easily, despite the results I've had when listening to Deicide and Mortician. I am far from being a death metal purist. I listen to all types of rock music, but this is a CD you should be lucky to own. If not that, purchase "The Best Of Malevolent Creation" for 6/10 of the CD, along with tracks from "Retribution" and "Stillborn".

5.0 out of 5 stars Death Metal Classic!!, August 6, 2008
By
This review is from: Ten Commandments (Audio CD)
I first got into Malevolent Creation when I came upon "The Best of Malevolent Creation" which was a compilation of their best songs from the Roadrunner Records era about four years ago at my local music store. I never even heard of these guys before, but I decided to give them a shot and when I did listen to them, I was instantly hooked to Malevolent Creation, and they became one of my favorite death metal bands as well. A couple months ago, I purchased the band's 1991 Roadrunner Records debut "The Ten Commandments" on eBay, and I instantly fell in love with it, and it's now one of my favorite death metal albums that I proudly listen to as well, I love it alot.

Recorded at Tampa, Florida's legendary Morrisound Studios which is very synominous with death metal, and produced by the legendary Scott Burns (who also produced albums by Death, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Sepultura, Atheist, Suffocation, Obituary, etc) Malevolent Creation's "The Ten Commandments" is one of the most brutal, vicious, unrelenting, and one of the greatest death metal albums of the early 90's, and not to mention it's also a true death metal classic as well. Musically this album is like a slasher film score on crack and speed, it just absolutely rips, shreds, slices, dices, tears, and blazes relentlessly through everything in it's path. Brett Hoffman's vocals on here are just vicious, scorching, commanding, and brutally powerful, and you can definately feel tons of anger and hatred in his voice. The guitar riffing courtesy of Phil Fasciana and Jeff Juszkiewicz is very technical and well complexed and perfectly played at varying speeds and techniques that are just downright brutal and ruthless, and not to mention they also rip out lots of killer, wailing solos that will make you grin in sheer delight. Jason Blachowicz delivers some great bass lines including a nice killer bass solo on "Sacrificial Annihilation", and Mark Simpson does an excellent all around furious, rapid, slamming job at assaulting the drums like crazy, and his double bass kicks will just slaughter everything in it's path.

There is not even one bad song on here, in fact every song on this album is a classic and a favorite of mine, whether it's "Sacrificial Annihilation" which is highlighted by wild, rapid steamrolling drums, lightning fast whirling riffs, a killer bass solo, a murderous wailing solo and mad fast paced vocals to boot, "Multiple Stab Wounds" which features heavy abrasive riffage, brutally destructive drumming, a murderous, commanding chorus and another wailing guitar solo, "Premature Burial" which hammers and rages through your speakers with surging, speeding riffs and relentless thrashing drum beats, harsh vocals, and a pair of killer solos, "Impaled Existence" which features more rapid-fire drumming, more fast paced complexed guitarwork including another great solo, or the murderous vocals, the ruthless abrasive riffing, dominating double bass drumming and powerful soloing which are all highlighted on "Thou Shall Kill!", "Remnants of Withered Decay" which features more wild, whirling riffs, anger induced vocals, and brutal slamming double bass drumwork, "Decadence Within" which is highlighted by more furious, slamming, blasting, drum beats, more fiery, surging riffs, and another great wailing solo, and the part where Brett belts out the line "WHY DOESN'T GOD HEAR YOU PRAY", and the closing title track which features a vicious, unforgiving, break-neck assault of wild, violent, rapid-fire skin bashing with more busy drilling double bass work, brutal, speeding guitars, another fast, killer solo, and some sounds of thunder in the background near the end not long before the song gradually fades out. Please read on for the song list with the songs in the right order and of course the ratings.
Jeremy's song ratings:
1. Memorial Arrangements (2:37) - 5/5
2. Premature Burial (3:17) - 5/5
3. Remnants of Withered Decay (3:54) - 5/5
4. Multiple Stab Wounds (3:34) - 5/5
5. Impaled Existence (3:25) - 5/5
6. Thou Shall Kill! (4:30) - 5/5
7. Sacrificial Annihilation (3:24) - 5/5
8. Decadence Within (4:21) - 5/5
9. Injected Sufferage (3:40) - 5/5
10. Malevolent Creation (5:31) - 5/5

See every song gets a 5 out of 5!

Overall, if you're into some great classic death metal, then you'll definately dig Malevolent Creation's "The Ten Commandments", yeah I know this album can be extremely hard to find especially on eBay (where I got this cd) since it's been long out of print, but it's definately worth every penny believe me. Highly recommended for all fans of death metal, and I also recommend Deicide's self titled debut, and Suffocation's "Effigy of the Forgotten" as well. Enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars No one can destroy THIS malevolent creation..., February 22, 2008
This review is from: Ten Commandments (Audio CD)
Take the violent thrashing agility of 'Darkness Descends' and mix with the lethal catchiness of Deicide's debut album. This record provides a perfect example of why momentum is so important for this style of music. An exhilliarating listen, with no wasted space, and new depths to be mined with every listen. Buy this and feel invincible.

5.0 out of 5 stars THOU SHELL KILL !!!!!!!!!!!, December 2, 2004
This review is from: Ten Commandments (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite Malevolent Creation albums in my collection as well as one of my favorite deah metal albums of all time. I brought it on my 15th birthday along with the band's second album Retribution and a Metallica cassette single of Wherever I May Roam. I bought all 3 on cassette. Anyway, these were the days where I was slowly but willingly getting into death metal and extreme metal in general. At the time, I had a deep hunger for it. I would listen to the old local show on radio station WSHE here in Florida. On the show, they played music only from bands out of Florida and they would play a lot of death metal. On one occassion, they played songs from Malevolent Creaion's second album Retribution along with a track from this album called Multiple Stab Wounds. Listening to the song sacred the hell of me but I was only new to death metal at the time. Than, there came a point where my hunger grew and I just couldn't take it anymore. So I went to the old Sound Wherehouse on my birthday and bought this album along with the other 2 that I mentioned and they all ripped.

Now for my review. This is the first album by Malevolent Creation and their first on Roadrunner Records. The best way I can discribed it is scary, sick, twisted, demented, gory, aggressive, powerful, deadly, intense, ripping, assulting, heavy, brutal, old school death metal at it's ultimate best. Even though the band is not satanic, all the tracks here are tuned to pure evil and are created for the decimation of your ears. The whole album itself is a classic, bar none. Some of my favorite songs here are Memorial Arrangements, Premature Burial, Multiple Stab Wounds, Thou Shell Kill, Sacrificial Annihilation, Injectied Sufferage and Malevolent Creation. Get it and prepare to be annihilated.
