Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Likening his journey of writing this book to the Israelites' passage to the promised land, Belasco, author of the groundbreaking business book Teaching the Elephant to Dance, systematically outlines 10 biblically based commandments designed to help listeners gain control of their lives both personally and professionally. Drawing on his high-profile executive positions (at AT&T, etc.), the 63-year-old Belasco emphasizes such tried-and-true principles as keeping commitments, remembering the Sabbath, honoring others with words, delivering one's best and reflecting humility. Claiming people don't lack motivation but focus, Belasco recommends concrete ways to apply his advice or to align one's actions with one's "soul's agenda" in every chapter. Although he has an established following, Belasco may put off newcomers with his forceful reading style. Moreover, he demands a great deal from the listener, who may find it necessary to play the recording several times in between doing the outside work he recommends. However, those who persevere will find the effort worthwhile. Based on the New Millennium hardcover.

From AudioFile

James Belasco, a popular business consultant, author, and professor at San Diego State, joins the ceaseless ranks of those with a formula for success. In this instance, the Ten Commandments are adapted for secular success. The format of this production is straightforward: A woman introduces each of the commandments; then the author reads a commentary on the life principle it addresses. This is further illustrated by several anecdotes. Belasco's ability as a public speaker is readily apparent in this recording. His delivery is direct and upbeat, with a disciplined energy that never lags. 4.0 out of 5 stars Common sense, but not very commonly used - it's a good read!, February 4, 2002
This review is from: The Ten Commandments of Success (Hardcover)
The "Ten Commandments of Success" is packed with practical, bite size morsels of the principles of success. Throw in the Ten Commandments, and it sounds like a basic premise for a book on success. However, the distinct power is his ability to communicate the value of building successful leadership that simultaneously builds heart in an organization while leaving a legacy. There's lots of common sense wisdom in the "Ten Commandments of Success," that I'm sure you'll find is prevalent in ALL successful individuals at some degree; especially the value of continuing to learn and treating others well. Though I listened to this one only once, it made such a positive impact on me, that I desire to revisit it a few more times and continue to "be a student."
