Great bar band,
By Julie (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ten Day Bender (Audio CD)
I acquired this CD from a friend who's a friend of the band. On my first listen, I was pleasantly surprised to hear some great musicianship from this Alaskan alt-country/jam band. They've been together for a few years and have had their share of local bar and club dates under their belts.
The vibe of this record is that of a very laid back bar band. If you like Neil Young, Phish, Grateful Dead, you'll like the Whipsaws. The songs are good, as are the vocals, although it may lag in spots. But you have to consider that this record was recorded a while ago, and they've added more songs and experience to their set list since then.

The Whipsaws Rock!,
By Thor-Zone (Anchorage, Alaska United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ten Day Bender (Audio CD)
The Whipsaws are a local band from Anchorage that are up and coming. I am really proud of how far they have come over the last few years. They are from my hometown and it is really cool to see them grow musically.
Ten Day Bender is the first real release from the Whipsaws. A lot of the songs are about Alaska and Alaskan stuff, and they rock. One of my favorites is the opening track which is called Petersville. It has a little bit of the White Stripes sound mixed in with Neil Young. A*s Grass Revival has a little banjo mixed in and it has a great feel to it. Shot Gun Wedding has a sweet pedal steel on it. Bootlegger's Blues is a nice little instrumental with a real nice crunchy Gibson (SG I think)on it. There are a number of tracks on this release that are creative soundscapes. For people who like Neil Young, Poco, The Drive By Truckers. It is just straight ahead rock with a little country mixed in and it sounds great. If you like rock or country rock, you can't go wrong with the Whipsaws!

Glorious Debut,
By Azilla (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ten Day Bender [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
The debut album from Alaska's The Whipsaws. Incredible songwriting accompanied by music and melodies that accent the singular mood of each song. Wayward John is poignant, probably because we all know someone like him. Contraband rocks and Petersville and Shotgun Wedding will attach themselves to your cerebellum like sonic leaches. In my opinion, the only song that brings down the album is Hole In My Heart, but it is playful and probably raucous live. If you like Neil Young, Two Cow Garage, The Wrinkle Neck Mules, or Drive By Truckers, I think there is a good chance you'll find something to add to your collection. Going live in the Lower 48 in 2008. Can't wait.

An amazing album,

This is an outstanding album, particularly for a first album by the artist. Evan Phillips shows his worth as an outstanding songwriter and vocalist. Petersville, the story of a true murder in a town with the population of 20, will give you chills, while Hole in my Heart will make you laugh. Great versatility, this hilbilly rock band will give you plenty of entertainment.

I like this record a lot, but the band has new line-up and really rocks on their latest CD "60 Watt Avenue".
