Book Description

January 1992 4 and up
Full color pastels and 50 carefully-chosen words introduce young children to the Ten Commandments. Moses, perched on the fingers of child-sized hands, leads the reader through the commandments, counting from one to ten.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-- An attractive concept book that presents the Ten Commandments in positive, age-appropriate language. A double-paged, tablet-shaped drawing surrounded by a colorful border is devoted to each ``rule.'' The commandments are numbered, and bright chalk and crayon illustations depict a child's hand(s) finger-counting them, while a miniature Moses pantomimes the words. A cast of ten small figures in biblical garb receive the commandments at the end of the book. A good story hour choice that will lend itself to finger plays, puppetry, or participatory chants. --Marcia Posner, Federation of New York and the Jewish Book Council, New York City

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for kids with divorced/separated parents, May 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Ten Good Rules (Paperback)
I bought this book after a quick glance because it looked like a good way to introduce my preschooler to the 10 Commandments. As a separated parent, I was therefore horrified to discover (in the midst of reading it to my son, of course) that "Do not commit adultery" was translated to "Husbands and wives should love each other" (not an exact quote)!

This book was telling my son that his father and I were breaking one of the 10 Commandments! Further, that is not at all a correct translation. I realize that this is a difficult commandment to explain to kids, but certainly the authors could have found a better alternative.

This review is from: Ten Good Rules (Paperback)
This book is simply written and easy for small children to understand. "Married people should love each other" for example. I've used it both in my classroom and with my own children! Not just for Jews - I taught in Catholic and United Methodist schools.
