Book Description

Ten Houses August 1999
Firm Profile: The Miller/Hull Partnership has built a reputation based on simple, elegant, and authentic designs. The Seattle firm, established in 1977, has pursued a rigorous logic in its design approach, which is based on the belief that architectural programs are best solved directly and efficiently. This rigor has resulted in a body of work that expresses powerful concepts in lyrical form.

Founding partners David Miller and Robert Hull, both raised in Washington State, have explored the development of two dominant themes in America's western regional architecture: the need to establish a defined place within the landscape, and the art of rational building. Their attitude toward building in the landscape takes advantage of a mutual inflection in which architecture and landscape seem to need each other for completion. In their residential architecture they attempt to capture the spirit and vitality of the American West by focusing on the tensions between nature and materiality, detail, and structure.

Miller/Hull has developed a community-based architecture for a variety of clients ranging from regional government agencies, colleges, and universities to private corporations and residential owners. The have been the recipient of more than seventy national and regional design awards during their first twenty years of practice. Their design work has been frequently published in international journals, has been featured in exhibitions--including two solo shows--and has been the subject of lectures given by the firm's Partners in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Italy.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Northwest Architecture, February 15, 2001

This review is from: Ten Houses: Miller Hull Partnership (Paperback)
This book represents an extrodianry environmental focus for design. The houses created by the Miller/Hull Partnership display architecture originality combined with a keen knowledge of the northwest. Each house is created in harmony with it's surrounding environment--a beautiful representation of both art and archecture.

Please note the customer review entitled, "Architecture Reference Book," does not reflect the correct designer. The architects represented in this book are David Miller, Bob Hull, Norm Strong, and other very talented designers from the Miller/Hull Partnership.

This review is from: Ten Houses: Miller Hull Partnership (Paperback)
This book is a terrific overview of the early work of Miller Hull. The projects presented range from small and spare to moderately sized and still elegantly spare. The work of this firm is admirable in it's tectonic approach and tasteful use of materials in their raw state. The book is part of an excellent series edited by Oscar Riera Ojeda: I have found that any book project that he oversees is a worthwhile addition to my library. Mr. Ojeda produces books with a great balance of intelligent but not pompous text, first class photography, and drawings of plans, sections, and details that I value as an architect. All in all, this is an excellent book, and part of an excellent series. I recommend both without reservation.
