This is a wonderful book, based on scripture and research that goes back to the original Greek and Hebrew. This is a MUST READ not just for women, but for anyone in or going into the ministry, anyone who teaches religion, anyone who teaches women's studies, and any open-minded man. The "Lies" that Grady outlines in this book are everyday things that women have been told not just since Christianity began, but since Judiasm began. It's about time that someone spoke out and said that women, who are the mainstay of Christianity, are NOT 2nd class citizens, and DO have a place in the church. Read it yourself and see. I found this Biblically based book so facinating that I zipped right through it. As I said, it's about time, and I'm glad it was a man who said it. God bless J. Lee Grady.

As a young Christian woman and having attended many churches, I have always been told to shelve my gifts and take a back seat to men. I was told that I am not intended to lead and anything I do in that sense is just evidence that I am a rebellious woman. I knew it was a lie and it felt wrong, but I didn't have the words to combat being beat down---now I do. This book is a brilliant work and it took just a heaviness off my soul and I feel that I can breathe knowing that I am following God and don't have ugliness in my soul because I am a woman and that I am not inferior to men. Ladies, and anyone who loves women, please read this book. It is amazing! :0)

This is a very timely and much needed book examining both the historical and contemporary role of women in the Church and focuses on studying the biblical texts that have been used to justify and maintain male dominance and female submission. It is well written, with clear and concise research and examples to support the author's arguments. Definitely worth a read for anyone interested in women's issues and the God intended role of women in the Church

I read this book several years ago. I love to read and frequent my local christian bookstore often. While on a visit one of the sales associate saw me perusing one of the aisles and announced "we got it, we got the book you asked for". Well I was curious and unsure if I was the one he recalled. I went along with him and he lead to the aisle and showed me this book. Well I was right, he confused me for another customer, but I was glad I went along with him. From the moment I read the title, it was hook-line-and-sinker. I couldn't put the book down.
I introduced it to others, and well let me say Christianity is not for the faint at heart and neither is the title of the book. Most people couldn't get past the title and totally refused to even open the book to page one. This book is meant for bold believers looking to change the world.
This book is refreshing, energizing, and liberating.
I looked at Jesus in a whole new light! I had a whole new appreciation for what Christ did in his ministry and of course the transaction on our behalf at calvary.
This book helped me. I am a female minister for Christ, and I have seen my fair share of religious bigotry.
This book gave me confidence to move forward in the vocation where I have been called.
I highly recommend this book to the entire body of Christ. It is long overdue. Buy it, it will change your world.

I didn't know the author was the man associated with Charisma magazine until recently, but this book is fantastic whether you are a charismatic person or not.

Every woman should read it and every man too. I think it's one of the best books on the subject.

Great book. First of all, for anyone who's wondering, this is not a book hating on the church. It's about exposing harmful lies that a good portion of the church has accepted about women. Personally, I found it to be quite accurate. I am a woman in the church who has been told or rather conveyed in one manner or another most of these lies. Reading the book was a very healing experience for me. I would recommend it for both men and women; not only was it very liberating for women, but I could see it also being very liberating for men, too. The lies men hear and believe about women mess them up, too. Anyway, props to J. Lee Grady for bravely releasing truth that empowers!

I was very well pleased with this book. It was very informative and made the scriptures make sense. In fact they really came alive. I wish every pastor would read it and they would learn something. I feel most of our pastors never research the history of the time that the scriptures were written to see what was happening and therefore they misuse the scriptures. Thanks to the author for writing it.

This amazing book is a very well written piece. It exposes the fallacies of much thinking that has been going on for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of years. For me, the most helpful thing was how Grady goes back to the original languages and explains to us the full meanings of the words used, particularly in the teachings of Paul. It is quite obvious, and anybody can look this up and verify it for themselves on a nice reference site like [...]. Thanks to this book and the internet, we don't need to each be Hebrew & Greek scholars to find out how badly certain translations have twisted Paul's meaning, claiming women should be quiet, not teach, and submit. It's sad that the patrician scholars have kept the status quo for so long and how few denominations are allowing women to fully express their spiritual gifts.

I have often pointed out that Mary & Martha were the first Christian "preachers" & "evangelists". This book goes into much more depth than that rather simplistic way of looking at the issue, but it is certainly not pro-feminist. This book is pro-Bible and pro-Christ, and still recognizes that men and women are different.

This book should be required reading in seminary. I would love to give a copy to every board of elders (or equivalent) at every congregation or denomination in every English-speaking country in the world!
