Red Herrings and a Box of Chocolates,
By
This review is from: Ten Little Herrings (Kindle Edition)
This is a mystery for people who enjoy humor along with their story. Elsie Thirkettle, a literary agent, and her client, mystery writer, Ethelred Tressider, are guests at a threadbare hotel in France. The hotel is hosting a few avid stamp collectors and two of them turn up dead. Elsie and Ethelred are suspects, and naturally, they must help solve the crime.
Luckily for the reader, there are a variety of guests who must be scrutinized by the pair of sleuths. These include a family of Danes, faceless British businessmen, and above all, Herbie Proctor, the pathetic walking advertisement for "a famine relief advertisement, but not so deserving." Herbie manages to stalk Elsie and Ethelred throughout the novel, seeking their company and ideas for free meals. The novel is written with a light touch and is filled with witty banter between the guests. Elsie who pursues chocolate and Ethelred who chases women share the narrative. Hardly a page goes by without a snarky comment or witty epigram, such as, "The first chocolate from a full box is a sacred moment." For mystery readers, this is a great book to savor and enjoy, just as you would a box of chocolates! |
