Despite being faced with the fact that their unborn daughter was doomed from conception to what their doctor described as "incompatibility with life," Brenda and Mike Winner nevertheless fought to find some kind of meaning in their anencephalic baby's death. Blocked at every turn by uneducated, unsympathetic right to life groups, Brenda and Mike went on talk shows, talked to newspapers, and desperately tried to find some way to have little Jarren's short life mean something, even as they coped with the inevitablility of the baby's impending death. Organ donation was the most viable option, but as yet no law existed to encompass the very special case of an anencephalic infant. Brenda and Mike fought for those changes, against a stonewall of difficult odds, hoping that their baby's life may at least save someone else's child. Their selflessness amidst their own tradgedy is astounding and incredibly brave, and Ten Perfect Fingers is a moving story of that struggle.
