Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS - Focusing on the activities of 10 toddling little ones, this inane volume offers nothing but a series of rhymed stereotypes. Young readers will fail to recognize many of the elements (e.g., "8 redneck babies riding bluetick hounds - /"One hid in kudzu on the red dirt ground") or just won't care about others ("5 redneck babies chomped watermelon./One made tracks - where to? No tellin'!"). While Ward manages to improve on the material she's saddled with, her babies are still cutesy and indistinguishable except for their different hairdos and clothing (diapers or overalls). The compositions are often cluttered, though the colors are pleasant and many of the details amusing. Stick with more enticing counting books such as Lorna Read and Jenny Tulip's One to Ten and Back Again (Brimax, 1999) or Phyllis Root's One Duck Stuck (Candlewick, 1998). - Susan Weitz, Spencer-Van Etten Schools, Spencer, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't resist a baby, September 17, 2004
A most adorable counting book, lending its southern hospitality, while counting up to ten and back again. Ten Redneck Babies tug at your heart as they shinnie up magnolia trees, gobble down Moon Pies, and lap up buttered grits. The rollickin' verse, accompanied with the extraordinary illustrations makes this book a must read. You will to gather up 'Sounthern Humor and hospitality' that will suggest you read this book over and over again. Whether you're chompin' on watermelon or spending your time trying to treed a possum, this book will stand out in your library and make you know that's it's hard to beat 'Southern Charm'.
