Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1. In this countdown concept book, whimsically drawn dinosaurs engage in childlike activities as they push and shove one another, dance, throw tomatoes, stomp on the floor, swing from a tree, and so on. One creature is eliminated for an amusing reason during each activity until only one is left, exhausted and napping. The book ends as his friends sneak up on him and all yell, "ROAR!" The double-page spreads of brightly colored, cartoonlike, generic dinosaurs with mischievous expressions are placed on white paper with little or no backgrounds. The generous white space emphasizes the action of the cavorting reptiles and sets off the large, clear typeface. The rhyming text is lively to read aloud, and young children will enjoy the boisterous characters.?Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA

Review

"Entertaining characters full of action and bravado fly and stomp across the pages in a cavorting dance of delight, ending with the satisfying roar when they all come back together. Clever use of pattern and colour make this crazy and exuberant tale a naughty delight. Kids will love it." Books for Keeps --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

"Ten terrible dinosaurs standing in a line..." I haven't read this book to my three year old son in several months yet the words are still memorable. One of his preschool teachers had brought it in and it was an instant hit with the class! It introduces young children the concept of counting backwards. Also, with the bright colors and action words a young child's vocabulary may be increased. Overall, a wonderful book for children and their parents!

This book is one of my 3 year old son's favorites at the moment (especially the picture with the dinosaur who ate too much). The illustrations are very bright and colorful. Text is simple but fun for counting down from 10 to 1.

The book is cute and the text is fun. However, I bought this book expecting the illustrations to be as creative and detailed as Dinosaur Roar. It was a let down in comparison.

I feel obligated to provide this review on behalf of my 3 year old son. Ten Terrible Dinosaurs was given to us as a gift and not necessarily a book I would have chosen - however, my son LOVES it, and it doesn't seem to be a passing phase, for the last several months it has been a frequent bedtime request. I suppose it has everything a 3 year old could want - dinosaurs, counting and it ends with a giant ROAR!

There are ten terrible dinosaurs in the story. The creatures push, shove, spike, and pop each other. Yet, they also, dance, smile and play goofy tricks on the other animals. In other words, the children will see themselves in the illustrations of the book. Plus, they will learn to count backwards.

Ten Terrible Dinosaurs is a cute counting book for kids who can't get enough of dinosaurs. Both my 1 year old and 2 year old love having the book read to them. The story has large, easy text with simple rhyming and a fun ending. The illustrations could use more work though since 6 of the 10 dinosaurs look the same except for different colorations and snout shapes. Considering the vast variety of dinosaurs our there the illustrator, Paul Stickland, should have used more variety in the dinos like he did in his Dinosaur Roar! book. Still, if your little ones love dinosaurs he/she is sure to like this book.

I am live in the ancient town of Sherborne, Dorset, in England, with my Bookseller and Songwriter wife Helen..
I have six children, Rowan, Felix, Gus, Kit, Arthur and Tabitha.
For the past few years, despite a rigorous publishing schedule, I have spent as much time as I can out on the road, giving inspirational talks and fun drawing and pop-up workshops to children (and their parents!) in schools, libraries and literary festivals, from Edinburgh, Cheltenham and Glastonbury.

I have worked in the UK, Italy and America, in a great diversity of settings, the more challenging the better!
The visits start with the simplest of readings, through explanations of the process of creating and producing a children's book, to drawing workshops and hands on pop-up workshops. I am happy to work with all sizes of groups. I have found working with children with special needs to be particularly rewarding.
I am a passionate advocate for the world of children's books and as the years pass, I have become more and more drawn to working with and empowering young children to expand their creativity through this magical world.
