Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS—Playful babies "spin," "bounce," and "hop" across the pages of this winsome counting book. The jaunty rhyme adds to the fun and anticipation: "5 jiggly babies wriggle their toes. Along comes another…." On the following page a sidebar reveals that the new friend "…wiggles her nose!" This youngster then joins in as "6 hungry babies sip and chew." Katz's gouache, colored-pencil, and collage illustrations feature her signature roundheaded characters. The backgrounds artfully combine complementary colors and patterns. After the multicultural chums splash in the tub and put on their pj's, they fall asleep in 10 cozy beds. A good choice for storytimes.—Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada

From Booklist

With hugs and tickles to point to, act out, and count, the author of Counting Kisses (2001) and Mommy Hugs (2006) creates another simple chanting rhyme for the very young child. Beginning with “1 tiny baby who starts to run. Along comes another . . . to have some fun,” and following along through a day that ends with 8 cuddly babies putting on pj’s, 9 drowsy babies who crawl to bed, and 10 babies fast asleep, the folk art collages, very colorful, will bring little ones back to the book over and over again. One delightful spread shows the 10 tiny feet of 5 babies, who are wriggling their toes; of course, little listeners and lookers will want to do the same. --Hazel Rochman

This book is a easy read. Love that each page is connected to the next page by adding a new baby to the story. Every baby on the page is cute and smiley. My little one loves to point at each baby and have me explain what they are doing. I agree with the other reviewer that this would have been nicer if it is a board book. My little one ripped some of the pages from turning the pages herself. Overall, I would recommend this for toddlers. At the end of the book, all the babies are sleeping. I think it is a good Go-To-Bed book also.

My kids and I tried /Ten Tiny Tickles/ by the same author and were completely unimpressed. This book, on the other hand, seems to be a huge hit with my 2 and 4 year-old. The 2 year-old especially made me read it at least 15 times in the last 12 hours. It is kid approved!

I also find I don't mind reading it over and over. Some books quickly bore me and I'll be yawning while trying to read them. Not this one. Possibly this is because the babies are cute, or there's always some new drawing detail to notice.

Anyway, this is definitely recommended.

My 10-month-old LOVES all the Karen Katz books. This is no exception. Didn't realize it wasn't a board book when I bought it, so she can only "read" it supervised by me, but we like it all the same. She finds the illustrations of the babies to be captivating with their smiley round faces. I'd recommend this almost as much as Karen Katz's Counting Kisses and 10 Tiny Tickles.

I've been reading this to my now 10 month old since birth and she has enjoyed it through the various stages of her development. This book is just fantastic on many levels. The illustrations are beautiful, the story is engaging, the baby activities are relatable. I've also given this book as a gift to all my mama friends and their babies also love the book. Can't recommend it enough!

this is currently my baby's favorite book. I think babies like it because they can see pictures of other babies and relate to the different things going on page by page. From running, to jumping, to bath time, to dinner, to pj's to bed! I highly recommend this book for ages 12mo and up :)

My 21 month old loved this book when we found it at the library, so much so that I bought it. It has nice rhymes, and flows nicely with lots of colorful fun drawings of various babies doing things that my daughter can relate to. Among her favorites, we read it every day!

Not only did I think this book was terrific, but my grand-daughter, her mother and my son loved it. Perfect for babies, toddlers, and very young children and adults who still have a little baby in them! Enjoy it...you will !

More About the Author

Check out my newest book WIGGLE YOUR TOES! A Book to pull, fluff, and wiggle!

I have always been interested in folk art from around the world, Indian miniatures, Mexican ceramics, fabrics, Chagall, Matisse, children's art, and primitive painting, and I love to paint and experiment with pattern, texture, collage and color. The careers I've had--as a costume designer, a quilt maker, a fabric artist, and a graphic designer--have taken all these interests into account. Looking back, I can see that these passions and career choices have played a large part in influencing me to become a children's book author and illustrator.

But most importantly, it was after my husband and I adopted our daughter from Guatemala that I was inspired to do a children's book for her. My first book, Over the Moon, was the story of that magical experience of welcoming our daughter Lena into our lives. I painted, I drew, I collaged, and I wrote, and after working very hard... a beautiful book was born! Twenty-two books later, my daughter--now fourteen years old--still is an inspiration for me.

I am fascinated by babies and little kids. The simplest words and gestures can make them laugh. Sometimes standing in line at the supermarket and watching kids in grocery carts, my best ideas are born.

I am fascinated by people from all over the world and what they look like and how they live and the differences that make us all unique.

When an idea pops into my head I ask these questions:
Will a child want to read this book?
Will a parent want to read this book with their child?
Will this book make a parent and child feel something?
Is there something visual here that will hold a child's interest?
Will a child see something in a different way after reading this book?
If the answer is yes, then I know I'm on the right track.

I am very lucky to get to do what I do. Everyday I go into my studio and have fun. Don't get me wrong, some days are very frustrating. Sometimes the colors are all wrong and the words don't sound right. But after I work at it for a while...and try to do it a different way...and think...and change the words or colors...and try some more...suddenly, there it is--a great page of writing, or a great illustration. And nothing is more satisfying than that.
