TEN followed up Y&T's near breakout album CONTAGIOUS with a commercial THUD! But, WAIT! THIS IS A VERY GOOD ALBUM! What happened? Most likely Geffen lost faith in the band's ability to sell, so TEN was shipped out with little fanfare or promotion. 3.0 out of 5 stars Contains Some Good Songs
I find this to be a pretty good album. It's about on the same level as the previous album Contagious. Quite a few songs are on this album: the best being "Hard Times," "Let it Out," and "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark." Not bad.

That's a shame, because this album is one of the strongest of their career, and had a potential hit in "Ten Lovers" (if they had released it in edited form as a single). "Hard Times" is the last of the Y&T signature songs ("25 Hours A Day," "Forever," "Mean Streak," etc.) and lyrically seems to concede that they had their shot, but just couldn't hit the target. The album is filled with gems; "City," "Goin' Off The Deep End," "Surrender," "She's Gone," etc, but it also has a few songs that have a more generic feel to them. Still, TEN is a Very strong album, and stands as one of Y&T's finest moments. They followed up TEN with a "farewell" tour and subsequent live album (YESTERDAY AND TODAY LIVE - a GREAT live album!), and years later with a "reunion" resulting in two strong albums, MUSICALLY INCORRECT and ENDANGERED SPECIES. But in 1990 the loyal Y&T fans were ecstatic about TEN, an album stylistaclly somewhere between MEAN STREAK and CONTAGIOUS. -(if you like this one, check out Tesla's GREAT RADIO CONTROVERSY and BUST A NUT CD's, and RATT's self-titled 1999 CD.)

ONE OF Y&T'S BEST ALBUMS, EVERY TRACK IS GREAT, ESPECIALLY WITH THE AWESOME SHM AUDIO FORMAT. MUST HAVE FOR ANY CD COLLECTION, BUT DON'T PAY THESE RIDICULOUS OVER-INFLATED PRICES, I BOUGHT MINE FROM THE MUSIC SPECIALIST ON E BAY, THEY ALSO HAVE A STORE IN GEMM, ANTEATERMUSIC. SAVE YOURSELF A TON OF CASH.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's still Y&T, and it still rocks!, April 11, 2008
This review is from: Ten (Audio CD)
I realize that Y&T appropriately titled 10th album - 1990's Ten - is not considered one of the band's best releases. Along with their 1986 album Contagious, Ten tends to be dismissed as part of Y&T's hair metal phase, and that's unfortunate given just how good the album really is.

Ten may have some hair metal trappings (beyond the band's look, there is an unmistakable hair metal production), but it's still pretty close to Y&T's classic melodic rock sound. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is one of my absolute favorite Y&T songs, and Hard Times, City, Come in From the Rain, She's Gone and Ten Lovers are vintage Y&T rockers. There are some filler tracks, but they're more than offset by the album's better songs.

It's not a perfect album by any means, but it's still a good Y&T album and one that shouldn't be dismissed lightly.

PS - I'd love to have a remastered version of this album (and Contagious too, while we're at it) to go along with the other great reissues the band has released lately.

This review is from: Ten (Audio CD)
UNFAIRLY UNDERRATED MUCH THE SAME AS "CONTAGIOUS".I LIKE TO THINK OF THIS ALBUM AS Y&T'S HEART,SOUL,SWEAT AND TEARS PUT INTO THIS ALBUM.EVERY SINGLE SONG IS GREAT,THE PRODUCTION DOES JUSTICE TO THIS GREAT BAND,THE ALBUM COVER IS BEAUTIFUL(I'D LIKE TO MEET HER).IT SOUNDS TIGHTER THAN "CONTAGIOUS",NOT BETTER, BUT BETTER PUT TOGETHER I THINK.I WILL ONLY SAY THAT BEING A LONG TIME Y&T FAN, I HAVE ALWAYS EXPECTED THE BEST FROM THIS BAND,AND THIS ALBUM DOESN'T LET ME DOWN.

3.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying and energetic., September 28, 2000
This review is from: Ten (Audio CD)
Ten is an energetic, solid, and melodic meat-and-potatoes hard rock album from Y&T. I find it to be just as good as their previous release Contagious. I've had this disc in my collection for several years. It's still cool and fun to listen to from time to time. The musicianship, songwriting, and production are tight and satisfying. There is a total of twelve tracks on the album. All of them are listenable. Dave Meniketti does an effective job with the vocals. The guitar work throughout is also lively and good. Some of the tunes that I like are "Surrender," "Let It Out," and "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark." Worth a listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Y&T's ten is a 9 out of 10!, March 19, 2008
This review is from: Ten (Audio CD)
Y&T's last studio effort before breakup.
Songs like Ten, Surrender, Red Hot & Ready
and She's Gone are classic hard rock Y&T!
The single Don't be afraid of the dark was
very well done and much better than most of
the rock ballads at the time. It's too bad
they got mixed up with the metal garbage that
MTV and record companies gave us and bascially
ruined heavy metal for some time. Thank God
bands like Y&T, Motorhead, UFO, Thin LIzzy,
Dio, Saxon et... are still around today.
Rock is not dead. If you don't have this then
get it and listen to some great rock from the 80s!
