3.0 out of 5 stars Review for the limited edition "P.O.D." soundtrack, November 24, 2006
This review is from: Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny (Audio CD)
This version of "PICK OF DESTINY", as noted, comes as follows:
* A copy of the soundtrack, which is NOT in a jewelcase, but in a cardboard package with the 3-D artwork pasted onto the front (NOTE it is the same 3-D/lenticular image that is also available on the regular edition of the soundtrack)
* 8 Tarot cards, each one an illustrated reflection of "the genesis of the D". Cute.
* A replica "pick of destiny", plastic-y but nicely detailed.
* A cheap fold-out poster - not the film artwork, but a shot of JB, KG and Saskquatch. It's quite small- it is housed in the cardboard CD holder.
* A cardboard box to hold it.

The music-- well we've all waited a LOOONG time for new Tenacious D material (I mean, they've been mainstream since their show debuted in '98 on HBO as a Mr. Show bumper, and this is only their 2nd album!), and personally I'm a bit let-down. A few of the songs are GREAT, but in total the album is only 35-min. long, and of that probably only 20 minutes are worthwhile NEW material ('Classico' and 'History of Tenacious D' are not new songs). I'd hoped for more, honestly; I suppose we'll have another 4-to-5 year wait for more material??

Overall this "Limited Edition" it's hardly worth the extra $$, in my opinion, unless you REALLY need the replica Pick Of Destiny. The 3-D artwork is the exact same as on the regular (and much cheaper) version, the cardboard case the CD comes-in is just cheap, and the poster is definately nothing special (it's so small I'm surprised they didn't include that in the regular version as well).

All that said-- ooking forward to seeing the flick.

If you pick up this limited edition cd you get some tarot cards that feature JB and KG on them, the soundtrack cd,and your own personal PICK OF DESTINY!!!!! How f'n cool is that! And to top it off it comes in a awesome looking embossed book to display, all your "D" loving friends will love it.The only down side that I see: not enough songs, just like my felow reviewer said, but the songs that are here are awesome! i can't wait 4 the movie !!!!Get it b4 it ends up costing you double or triple because you didn't act fast...believe me it's worth every penny, much better than just the soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great FUN, November 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny (Audio CD)
Some months ago I saw this special edt.box with guitar pick, tarrotcards & poster in a store. Ofcourse I'm familiar with the movie and the music played in it. The special box in the store was a bit too expensive so I decided to check out Amazon. Amazon offered it for a lower price so I decided to purchase the product there. For everyone who saw the movie and liked it, this is an recommendable purchase. The cards are all original aswell as the guitar pick. The pick however is just for looking at and not really useable. The only downside is the absence of a booklet, so I give it a four star rate. Some of the other reviews I've read made me decide to buy this album. I hope my review will help the reader to decide to purchase or not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reviewing the unreviewable, June 12, 2008
This review is from: Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny (Audio CD)
How do you review an album that's not meant to be taken seriously on almost any level that is the soundtrack of a movie that was a comedy full of in jokes about hard rock and metal? Answer? With great difficulty. So here is a brief run down of what you get;

Jack Black and Kyle Gass basically spend a lot of time twanging acoustic guitars in a plentiful supply of acoustic tracks with vocals delivered by Black in a nicely produced work where it's actually important to hear the lyrics. The album basically follows the course of the film and a number of the tunes like ....well like a bunch of them don't really make a lot of sense taken out of that context. So you really need to see the film dudes. But other parts of the disc do work even if you've yet to catch a look at the film, like the lead track and track #13 Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown). The whole thing works better if your into hard rock and metal and essentially if you liked School of Rock or the film picking this up on the cheap is a good move and it will be a mood lifter when you want to listen to something that won't melt the pet beagle.

That's about it, all that remains is to point out the long and distinguished list of guest musicians like Meatloaf, Ronnie James Dio and Dave Grohl and it's quite clear that all the people on the album have some talent and it's kinda funny that they were all happy to get into this project.

Cheery listening but just be warned that a lot of the tracks will probably be guilty pleasures of comedic worth to you but your not going to put a lot of the numbers here onto your self burned greatest hits disc to play in your car.

4.0 out of 5 stars Edited Version: Even Funnier, February 21, 2008
This review is from: Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny (Audio CD)
Listening to this album brings back all the fondest memories of the movie, like Jables blowing up a guy's head with his voice or flying through the clouds with Bigfoot on their way to the "Stwah-bewwy Wivver".

The edited version I bought is even funnier with the words they have chosen to substitute instead of just dropping the audio.

For Example:

-Kickapoo:
"My Father says your evil, but, man, he can suck a ROCK"!
-Classico:
"He is going to MOW YOUR FREAKING GRASS and you know, his name is Kyle Gass...rocking and FREAKING rolling, etc."
-The Government Totally Sucks:
"The goverment would BUTTERCUP his right-e-ous A!"

Anyway, as you can imagine, they had a lot of "F-Bombs" to cover up, but you still get like 3 of them in for dramatic effect.

So if you can get your hands on an edited copy, I highly recommend it, otherwise enjoy it for what it is: rockin' riffs with funny twists.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

If you love Tenacious D get this, if you love Jack Black and Kyle Gas get this, if you loved the movie, guess what...get this. This set has a cd with very funny songs on it, a mini poster which is great, 9 tarrot cards and the pick of destiny itself. I strongly recommended this for anyone who is a fan. I sure love it!!!

This review is from: Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny (Audio CD)
Those guys are so awesome.
The Soundtrack was for some reason here in Germany only for a few days available and will be ready to buy again as the movie starts here in Feb. 2007. So I've buyed it here in the US.
A (short) good album where rock is celebrated by two men which know ho to rock!
For any rock-fan the perfect album!!

Good album with some great tracks. Not as good as the first album which had a great variety of songs. The songs on this album are direct from the movie, so if you havent seen the movie, it will all sound a bit odd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Only one significant flaw, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny (Audio CD)
If you loved the movie, you already know you'll love the soundtrack. If you're a fan of comedy music and you haven't been introduced to Tenacious D, maybe their previous album is a better place to start- though this one has several superior tracks it may depend a little on already knowing about Jable's and Kyle's lyrical exploits. The only bad thing I can saw about this album critically is that it's way too short, being barely over 30 minutes.
