Mayuka was created by the demon Yuzuha, the embodiment of the Tree of Darkness. She fell in love with Yosho, Tenchi's grandfather, when he was a child on Jurai, but was driven away by his guards. After centuries of nursing her hatred, she plans to strike at Yosho through Tenchi. Ryoko and Tenchi battle Yuzuha in a weird netherworld filled with vicious but saccharine-looking toys. They finally defeat her with the help of Ayeka, who enables Tenchi to use his Jurai powers: he cleaves the demon in two with the Lighthawk sword. The second Tenchi feature is the oddest of the three, with the strongest conflicts among characters: Tenchi even loses his temper and slaps Ryoko. It's less playful than the other entries in the series, but still entertaining.
The one-hour feature comes with a Tenchi encyclopedia--different from the one included with the Tenchi Muyô! DVDs--that offers useful information about the characters, although its links are a bit temperamental.
Unrated; recommended for ages 12 and older for brief nudity and cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon

The Equal to The First Movie. Awesome!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tenchi the Movie 2 - The Daughter of Darkness (DVD)
Tenchi the Movie 2 is definitely a worthy sequel to its predesesor. This movie gets more into character development than the first movie, and it is just as charming, touching, funny, and well animated. This movie introduces two new characters to the Tenchi Universe, the lovable and cute Mayuka, and the sinister, but rather sad villain Yuzuha. As was said in other reviews, Ryoko fans must see this movie, as she is one of the charaters this movie focuses on the most, and many of the movie's most touching scenes involve her. It would help the viewer to see some of the Tenchi OVA Anime TV episodes to see where some of the nuances of the movie come from, like the origin of the lighthawk sword, but it isn't nessesary to understand the plot. A quaint note about Tenchi 2 is that it is a rather Christmasy Anime movie, so this is a great movie to watch around the holidays if you like Anime. Again, this movie is one of the best of all Japanese Animation, and anyone who buys it will not be dissapointed.

Tenchi and his Clique are Back!,

This review is from: Tenchi Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"Tenchi Muyo! Manatsu no Eve" is a movie I truly enjoyed. I've watched all three "Tenchi" series again and again on the Cartoon Network, and have become a Tenchi fanatic. I can't help myself - the characters are compelling and their relationships complex. This particular movie seems to follow and combine "Tenchi Muyo!" and "Tenchi Universe" in that Tenchi is related to the royal family of planet Jurai, with Lighthawk swords and everything. I don't think this movie, "Daughter of Darkness," is for a general audience, as it immediately assumes that the viewer is familiar with the general Tenchi storylines and characters. The movie begins with a pleasant summer day, Tenchi and the girls doing their chores around the house and the Masaki shrine. As Tenchi prepares to come home for lunch, he is confronted by a young girl, Mayuka, who insistently calls Tenchi her "daddy." For all of us who are familiar with Tenchi himself, you know that when something so unusual comes out of nowhere, Tenchi freaks out. Nothing new here on that tip. Returning home, of course, Ryoko and Ayeka are beside themselves with jealousy and consternation upon meeting Mayuka. As it turns out, there is a demon-child named Yuzuha who created Mayuka to exact a centuries-planned revenge plot against Lord Katsuhito/Yosho (Tenchi's grandfather). Tenchi and his family must figure out what to do with Mayuka and how to defeat the demon Yuzuha. Oddly enough, since the characters and their milieu is taken largely from the first two television series', the plot of the movie closely mirrors the plot of the third series, "Tenchi in Tokyo." Another odd parallel is that the English voice actor for Mayuka sounds eerily similar to the voice actor who played Sakuya in "Tokyo." The best thing about "Daughter of Darkness" for me was the role that Little Washu, my favourite character, plays in the story. K.T. Vogt, her English voice actor, does a brilliant job, as usual, in making Washu insightful, intelligent, sarcastic, and adorable. The worst thing about the movie for me was its length. At only one hour, the movie plays like the last few episodes of a typical series, but without the development of contexts or characters. Like I said earlier, it assumes you know all the basics. Also, I don't really understand all the christological referents that surround Mayuka, but I'll leave that to a brighter analyst to parse its significance. At any rate, "Daughter of Darkness" is a fine movie, well-animated (better than the TV shows for my money) and well-acted. I've already watched it through at least four times, and it really grows on you quickly. If you love Tenchi, Washu, Mihoshi, Ryoko, Ayeka, Kiyone, Sasami, Katsuhito, Nobuyuki, and Ryo-Ohki already, go and get the movie immediately. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, start with the television series' first.

A GREAT Movie!,
This review is from: Tenchi Movie 2: [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A fantastic movie! 5 stars! For those of you who are questioning buying, here is my short summary: *On a mid-summer's eve a bishojo young girl, by the name of Mayuka, comes to the shrine looking for her 'daddy', and to EVERYONE's surprise, she claims that Tenchi is him! With no memory of her mother, Mayuka has nowhere to go and stays in the Masaki home(which causes CHAOS in the household of young woman!)* Follow the story through the tale to revel Mayuka's past which links between Yoshu's. A classic amoung Tenchi fans or just the Anime obsessed. I recommend this for an older age group though due to mature sequences.(I'm thinking *PG13-mature audience AND I DO mean 13 years old)Beautiful Backgrounds and scenary, and colourful charators as expected from a Tenchi movie. Focuses MAINLY on Tenchi, Yoshu, Mayuka, Ryoko, and our villaness. A lovely sequal next to the 'Tenchi Movie'(also recommended). ~THIS IS WORTH BUYING!~
