Not what I expected,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tenchi Muyo! Sasami Stories (Paperback)
I bought this book expecting what the book description said: "7 all new stories". That is not the case. The book is a compilation of Sasami stories (about 4 of them) that were done in the No Need for Tenchi series. The only thing new about this book is at the end where they featured comic strips that the author drew for a fan club newsletter for many years that were not released to the public before. These strips were basically a marketing ploy and have no contribution to the story of Tenchi at all. I do not suggest this book to someone who already collected the No Need for Tenchi stories. This book is good for someone who is a Sasami fan, or wishes to have all works done by this author.

Although almost all of the stories are in No need for Tenchi they are still nice to have in one book. This is a wonderful book that I like to read over and over again. The end pages are wonderful also, though I suggest that you are over 12 to read them.

The sum of the parts...,

This review is from: Tenchi Muyo! Sasami Stories (Paperback)
Sasami Stories reprints three stories from the No Need for Tenchi series, as well as seventy-four previously unpublished four-panel comic strips from the Pioneer LDC Fan Club Newsletter. The reprints are from volumes 3, 8, and 12, and are "Wolf at the Door", "The Ferrous Chef", and "Help". While these earthbound character-driven stories focus on Sasami, the rest of the cast have their opportunities as well. The Fan Club strips includes bits of commentary between the author and Sasami (!) as background to understand the strips better.
Unfortunately, I'm ambivalent about recommending this book. While the Sasami stories are quite enjoyable and are self-contained, most Tenchi readers are probably already collecting the No Need for Tenchi series where these stories are already published. The Fan Club strips assume the reader is familiar with even the Tenchi and Pretty Sammy OAVs. Still, if you are or do know someone who's a fan of the Tenchi anime yet doesn't read manga, Sasami Stories would be a good introduction to the Tenchi manga universe. |
