4.0 out of 5 stars Ahh, A Plot Emerges..., January 22, 2001

This review is from: Tenchi Universe - Volume 5 - Space I (DVD)
As I rewatch the original Tenchi Muyo TV series - this time on DVD - I find myself liking it even more than I did the first time. Aside from being generally light and entertaining, the animation for the series is quite light and well done - almost direct-to-video (OAV) quality.

For the fifth (of eight) discs in the series, Tenchi, his family and his friends find themselves suddenly (literally) pulcked from Earth and into space - and a plot. With the series now halfway over, the characters of Tenchi have left behind the character development, the light silliness and the few pieces of foreshadowing presented in discs one through four in favor of a political mystery on Ayeka and Sasami's homeworld, a a galactic game of cat-and-mouse and, oh yes, some serious silliness.

While I enjoyed the four discs before this one, it was nice to actually feel that there is a driving plot and direction in the series. The mood in this disc does stay relatively light, but it foreshadows the increased drama of the future episodes.

In terms of the quality of the DVD release itself, I am continually glad that Pioneer included the episodes uncut for the DVD release - with full openings and endings for each episode (something they did not do for the VHS release). The digital extras are minimal - line art and character data - but welcome in the sense that anything was given to a disc this late in the series is nice. The finger puppets that come with the early pressings of each disc are adorable and have become a point of curiousity for me as I work my way through the discs wondering who the next group of "super-deformed" Tenchi characters made into finger-puppet form will be.

If you're working your way through the series, definitely get this disc. If you want to start watching Tenchi in its original form but find the earlier, plot-light episodes a bit too much to handle, this might be a better place to start again. Either way, it's a DVD worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like the particular anime., October 5, 2010
This review is from: Tenchi Universe - Volume 5 - Space I (DVD)
I like the Tenchi Muyo series. This DVD is from the Tenchi Universe series. This DVD starts with the Jurai Empire comes and arrest Princess Ayeka, and the Space Pirate Ryoko. So, Tenchi Masaki, and the rest ended up heading into space to rescue them.
Instead of just buying individual dvds of the series, I would go for the entire box sets. The box sets usually have different more features than the lone dvds have.

First Kiyone's request for a transfer has been approved and she has been promoted and has been assigned to HQ. While this is going on Ayeka, Sasami and Ryoko are arrested by Jurai military. Ayeka and Sasami were arrested for high treason and Ryoko was arrested because the Jurai realized she was a wanted space pirate. With help from Mihoshi and Kiyone, Tenchi and the rest of the gang are able to rescue the girls, with help from Ryo-Ohki who basicly turns into a spaceship while still INSIDE The Jurai warship. Just think about the repair bills!
It seems the new Emperor, Yosho, has been approved by the Jurai Planetary Council. Yosho happens to be the name of a noble prince who was thought to have died many years ago after REFUSING the throne. Why would he come back?
Back at Police HQ, both Mihoshi and Kiyone get in trouble when Mihoshi overhears a Jurai agent plotting with a Galaxy Police Official. It seems Ayeka is to be turned over to the Emperor the second the police find her. Mihoshi, in fact, helps save Kiyone from capture as only Mihoshi can! They end up joining the rest of the fugitives.
In the last episode of the DVD we find the gang low on spaceship fuel and they don't dare go to a gas station. So the gang goes to a heavily populated planet where they can mix in with the crowds. There the girls end up getting jobs as hostesses and dish washers while the male folk get jobs at the same bar as bartenders, doormen and so on. They end up blowing up the bar and being chased by police, only to escape because Nagi refuses to let anybody catch Ryoko but herself. In other words she fires on the police!
Now the gang are terrorists and they still don't know what's going on!
