From Publishers Weekly

Twelve years have passed since the hit-and-run death of Olivia Hammond's husband, and the mystery of what happened to the booty of the gold heist he was allegedly involved in only weeks before his death remains unsolved. Now 38, Olivia is the owner of a successful day spa and mother of two well-adjusted adult children; her biggest problems are shedding the extra 30 pounds she's gained over the years and finding a cure for empty-nest syndrome. Her stable world is turned upside down when she becomes the target of an anonymous extortionist threatening to uncover incriminating evidence on her deceased husband. After unwisely caving in to the blackmailer's initial demand, Olivia hires a private investigator, Clifton Zayne, instead of involving the police. More determined than ever to catch the culprit after a second letter threatens her children, Olivia is soon spending long hours undercover and on stakeouts with the handsome PI. Poarch's (Intimate Secrets) mix of business and pleasure is only half successful; mystery fans will find the blackmail plot well paced, but there may not be enough believable romantic chemistry between the ordinary characters to sustain all readers' interest. From Library Journal

Twelve years after her husband was killed in a hit-and-run accident soon after the armored car he was driving had been robbed, Olivia Hammond is a successful businesswoman, has two children in college, and has her life back. Then a blackmailer threatens to spoil it all. But when Olivia hires an attractive, tenacious private investigator to get to the bottom of things, blackmail suddenly becomes the least of her worries. A pair of well-matched protagonists set sparks flying in this fast-paced, rather suspenseful contemporary that helps a cynical, untrusting hero and a heroine who needs to let go of the past to find healing and love. Poarch (Intimate Secrets) has written a number of African American romances for the Arabesque line and lives in Springfield, VA.

1.0 out of 5 stars TENDER ESCAPE, April 24, 2000
This review is from: Tender Escape (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read a couple of books by Candice Poarch, this just did not live up to the others. The storyline was much too slow in developing. You should have spent more time developing the characters and less time on the boring story. It was so slow that I couldn't even finish it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy It, Easy Reading, Kept you wondering!, February 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Tender Escape (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Ms Poarch's book was our reading for the month of February. This book was a first for some of our members. They had never had the experience in read romance before. All of us thoroughly enjoyed this book. Our Club is based in the WashDC Metro Area so, the locations mention in "Tender Escape" was easy for us visualize. All of us anonymously agree, that story line was great. Made you eager to turn the next page. It really made you want to cheat by jumping to the back to find out who did it. We all are eager, to see what becomes of Craig, Rochelle, and Allen. Of course, would like to her write Bill and Ronnie's story. Everyone needs a little romance. Thanks Candice, waiting on the next book.

3.0 out of 5 stars This "Tender Escape" did not move me!!, November 16, 2000
This review is from: Tender Escape (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Ok, if this book seems that this book as not too hot, it wasn't! But it did have great characteristics of a mystery/suspense novel. Hello, where was the romance? A fellow reviewer said something about not to expect good things from Poarch, but her pervious works are the bomb, it was just this book. Poarch is my girl, but I felt this book could have been more romantic than it was. Olivia and Clifton seemed to fall into the some type of partnership, before I know it they were in love and in a personal relationship, what's up with that! One minute their on a steakout, then all of a sudden in each others arms. I just felt there should have been more romance, since it is being called a romance novel!! I loved the way Poarch brought to light the delicate issue of loving someone for who they are on the inside, instead of just the outside! It was a very easy read, but not at all what I am used to from Poarch to produce! But I'm still a big fan!
