Grant Smith and Lydia Reynolds seemed destined to marry until the Mexican-American War intervened. Grant, an army officer, is reported killed, leaving Lydia devastated. When Grant returns after years in a prison camp, he is shocked to learn that Lydia has married and moved out west. He also marries another but doesn't forget his first love. Years pass and Grant's daughter becomes a mail-order bride to a pastor out West, which eventually leads to Grant's reunion with Lydia. Although the Christian message is at times heavy-handed, this intriguing look at an exciting time in American history should please romance fans, especially those who liked the earlier titles in the series (e.g., A Time To Love, Multomah, 1998). For larger collections.

I borrowed this book from a friend, (boy am I glad this book isn't mine). It was too fictional. The characters are too perfect. We're all human, and we've all messed up at least once in our lifetime, so it's pretty hard to read a book about 'perfect' people.
This book had a fantasy family. The children rarely fought. The parents never gave each other one of those 'looks'. They had the 'always' reliable friends, the type of friends you could only dream about. They never messed up. They never made a mistake. They never seemed to doubt God. You didn't really get to know the characters. So you really coudn't feel sorry for them. The characters were flat. They were boring.
The authors tried to put surprises in, but the book would always lead right back to the original path. Their detours in this book (to try to make it more interesting) just prolonged the book, and made it boring.
I must admit, that when I had read just the first couple pages of this book I was excited. Unfortunely the rest of the book wasn't all that I had expected.
This book had a great story line (that's why it got two stars) but it was poorly written. If you really want to read this book, my advice would be to either borrow from a friend, or borrow from a library. After that, if you really like it, I guess buy it. I personally wouldn't buy this book, But hey, last time I checked this was still a free country.

What are the chances of having conections with the same people in the way that they do? This was an interesting book in some parts, but the use of "coincedenses" was quite sappy, I thought.

Another big turn off for me is that the picture on the front was rather sappy. Maybe it's just me--it just didn't set right. It was kind of boring-looking and made them look like a boring couple.

I enjoyed the book, I'll admit its a little slow at times but all in all it was a good book.
