Lexi Taylor was abandoned once by Cooper Jackson, and from that experience, realizes that children need dreams to help them overcome the problems that life throws at them in the form of divorces, abandonment and latchkey aloneness. Her own nephew is in the same situation, dumped on Lexi by his mother. Filled with love for him, Lexi tries to reach the sullen, unhappy pre-teen, but cannot break through his reserve. Still, she hopes Thursday's Child, her recreation center, will open his heart. Needing money, she agrees to a bachelorette auction to fund her venture. When Cooper Jackson, the man she loved and lost bids the highest for a date with her, she must comply, or lose the money. Andy, her nephew, is star-struck with the NFL star, and Coop is happy to give him attention. This brings Coop back into Lexi's world, and she's not sure she can handle him leaving once more. But faith in God, faith in her center, and finally, faith in Cooper, give Lexi all the ammunition she needs to find the love of her life once again.

Six years ago, Cooper Jackson turned his back on Lexi Taylor for fame and fortune as the NFL's newest superstar. But fame isn't all it's cracked up to be, and when an injury sidelines his career, Cooper has to make a decision. Exercising his bum knee and watching TV aren't where he wants to be...until he sees Lexi on TV, trying to raise money for her afterschool program to keep latchkey kids off the street. In a moment of insanity, Cooper makes the highest bid to win a date with Thursday's Child's director...Lexi Taylor.

Lexi Taylor is committed to helping children whose lives are broken by divorce, or simple abandonment, like her own nephew, Andy. Kids caught in the cracks of society, who would otherwise turn to unsavory lives, can now be given attention through her recreation center. After school programs with games, homework help and refreshments offer an alternative to being left alone at home.

Cooper finds that the easy-going Lexi he used to know is gone. And despite her nephew's adulation, Coop isn't welcomed with open arms by Ms. Taylor. But he is determined to be in her life, and dare he say it? Falling in love with her again. Overcoming obstacles of trust and forgiveness, Cooper begins to see where his life leads...straight to the tender mercies of Lexi Taylor.

In Tender Mercies, once again Mary Manners' characters lead us down a seemingly dark path, full of emotion and longing. Both Lexi and Cooper feel that their past decisions were made for them, that their choices were forced by the circumstances of one another. Yet neither knows that they both feel the same about the past. Both know they need closure, but is closure what they want?

Mary Manners has a knack for allowing her characters to dance a waltz for awhile and then dropping them into a situation where they must jitterbug. The only escape for Lexi and Cooper is to face their past so they can move toward the future. And the future is always uncertain. Once again this seemingly dark path ends in brilliance.

Mary Manners first book, Mended Heart, was a great read and in Tender Mercies she triumphs again.

Mary Manners has written an amazing Christian book, TENDER MERCIES, a captivating love story between Cooper, an NFL quaterback who sustains a knee injury, and Lexi, a woman with a jilted heart that raises her abandoned pre-teen nephew and organizes an online auction to raise funds for a down and in trouble youth center.
Cooper and Lexi were high school sweethearts, who have a heart-breaking split. When Cooper returns home to recuparate after a knee injury, the former sweethearts see each other which brings back old hurts. Lexi's secret keeps the couple in turmoil. With a tear-jearing ending, the book has me intrigued until the last page.
I highly recommend TENDER MERCIES and will be reading Mary Manner's books from now on.

Cooper Jackson and Lexie Taylor have known each other all of their lives. They fell in love in college and would have married but Cooper's call to the NFL came between them. Now a serious injury has Cooper sidelined and he's back in Lexie's life. This second chance at love story with a secret has the premise to be predictable. But nothing about it is predictable. Cooper and Lexie are engaging, entertaining and just fun to read about. The emotions are real and capture you on the first page. I loved the down home feel of this story. Mary Manners has a great writing style with a knack for atmosphere. All I can say is she just keeps getting better and better!
