World class wildlife photographers document the bond that knows no boundaries in Tender Moments in the Wild: Animals and their Babies, ed. by Stephanie Maze. A border of tiny stamps outlines the spread of each featured creature with a simple line of text (e.g.,"A seal cuddles with her baby on the beach"; "a crocodile carries her babies carefully in her powerful jaws").

reS-Gr 2-This attractive celebration of the mother/child bond shows how some adult animals care for their young. Each spread features an appealing color photo of an animal with its baby(ies) that nicely represents a moment of maternal affection. The creatures depicted range from the photogenic polar bear and tiger families to a mother scorpion carrying her brood on her back and a female snake watching over her young. Silhouettes of each featured animal against a bright color create a border around each photo and add a clever design element. The minimal text, which is overlaid onto the art, does little more than identify the animal and activity shown. It's simple enough for newly independent readers, but would be equally well suited for one-on-one reading with preschoolers, who will be drawn to the pictures and will appreciate the book's premise. In comparison to Caroline Arnold's Mother and Baby Zoo Animals (Carolrhoda, 1999), Tender has larger art and less text.
