Editorial Reviews

Kenny Burrel is one of those few great guitarists who has been touring with the who is who of Jazz. Furthermore, he has acted on a great number of CDs either as leader or sideman. This live solo concert in Pasadena shows the skills of this talented artist who has never pushed himself to the fore.

Tenderly provides a large choice of popular songs and standards.

Kenny Burrel is simply the perfect reference in terms of jazz guitar !

Mr. Burrell is my favorite jazz guitarist and I have many of his CDs. This is now my number 1....the playing is superb, the song selection is likewise, and you even get to hear him sing! You can really appreciate Mr. Burrell's expertise when you hear him solo; what a bold and confident statement about his musicianship he makes in this collection! It's a real tribute to his career to go out and perform in this fashion at 80 years old. Totally soulful and inspirational. I would love to see him in person, but this will do until that opportunity arrives.

If you're a fan of KB's music, this recording should be an addition to your collection. If you're interested in the development of jazz - especially narrated and played by one of the last greats from an earlier era - it should be purchased.
The playing is flawless, the selection of numbers appropriate and informative (I had no idea Burrell played on Armstrong's "It's a Wonderful World"). A new studio album is hopefully next in line. Kenny shows no sign of slowing down at 80!

It's been a while since I've written an Amazon review - but this recording is well worth breaking my self imposed silence. Those of us who have been lucky enough to ever catch Burrell live know that it is not uncommon for him to treat the audience with a solo performance. This recording draws from those live performances to present a master of inflection and creativity. Much of Burrell's playing since the 80's has centered on tone and melodic harmony combined with his classic "bluing" of individual notes. No one is better at it and he is at the top of his form here. Playing "pretty" for a less creative person is often boring and close to vapid. not so with Burrell. There is not a more romantic but hard bop sound around. This album fulfills the promise of Guitar Forms and just plain "badass" of Midnight Blue. There is no one around playing beautiful melody like Burrell - only perhaps Jim Hall comes close - but Burrell is much more versatile.(KB was the only guitarist that Coltrane every shared leadership with on a recording date). Most current jazz guitarist are the students - Burrell, as evident from this recording is the master.

I'm A jazz guitarist, retired, and at my age, I've heard everyone. There are only a few guitarist that can be identified by their sound, and only one who can be identified by touch...that is Kenny Burrell. This is him at his best, and I've got all his albums. Kenny not only hears melodies, he hears chords, voicings and passing tones, before he plays them. He has never sounded better, in fact, I think this is his best work to date.

l bought this cd on Amazon.ca because they would not let me order it on Amazon dot com. lt seems alot of items l have trouble getting from Amazon. So l get those items else sense Amazon.com makes some of them unavailable in Canada for
some reason. Anyway, l have the Kenny Burrell cd and l absolutely love it! People do not download this cd. Mr. Burrell writes the liner notes and that alone is worth buying the hard copy. Plus Kenny Burrell sings on this cd!
l am ready to buy this as a gift for my brother-in-law because l know he would like this cd. The man is truly a master and we are all lucky Mr. Burrell lived long enough to record a album he has been wanting to do for many years. And that is, a live solo album. There are many recordings of Kenny Burrell during solo pieces in a band context, but this is just him. l hope l get a chance to see him perform solo or otherwise !

This is really a virtuoso solo performance. His comments reveal his humble humanity. His talent is amazing! A memorable Live performance by a guitar genius.

If you like jazz guitar solo this is for you. Kenny is a true master, no question. I really like to hear the master himself sharing insights about the tunes and arrangements. That does not bother me at all, as Kenny speaking is almost so nice to hear as his playing. The only drawback is a bad mix in a couple tunes ("Come on blues", for example), but that does not compromise this excellent album. Strongly recommended !
