Mr. Burrell is my favorite jazz guitarist and I have many of his CDs. This is now my number 1....the playing is superb, the song selection is likewise, and you even get to hear him sing! You can really appreciate Mr. Burrell's expertise when you hear him solo; what a bold and confident statement about his musicianship he makes in this collection! It's a real tribute to his career to go out and perform in this fashion at 80 years old. Totally soulful and inspirational. I would love to see him in person, but this will do until that opportunity arrives.

A Musical Journey,
By Enjoying the Ride (USA) - See all my reviews

If you're a fan of KB's music, this recording should be an addition to your collection. If you're interested in the development of jazz - especially narrated and played by one of the last greats from an earlier era - it should be purchased. The playing is flawless, the selection of numbers appropriate and informative (I had no idea Burrell played on Armstrong's "It's a Wonderful World"). A new studio album is hopefully next in line. Kenny shows no sign of slowing down at 80!

Outstanding Classic Burrell - With a Solo Guitar Twist,

It's been a while since I've written an Amazon review - but this recording is well worth breaking my self imposed silence. Those of us who have been lucky enough to ever catch Burrell live know that it is not uncommon for him to treat the audience with a solo performance. This recording draws from those live performances to present a master of inflection and creativity. Much of Burrell's playing since the 80's has centered on tone and melodic harmony combined with his classic "bluing" of individual notes. No one is better at it and he is at the top of his form here. Playing "pretty" for a less creative person is often boring and close to vapid. not so with Burrell. There is not a more romantic but hard bop sound around. This album fulfills the promise of Guitar Forms and just plain "badass" of Midnight Blue. There is no one around playing beautiful melody like Burrell - only perhaps Jim Hall comes close - but Burrell is much more versatile.(KB was the only guitarist that Coltrane every shared leadership with on a recording date). Most current jazz guitarist are the students - Burrell, as evident from this recording is the master.
