Excelent songs, wonderful band, outstanding job,
By Allan Cavalcanti (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tenderness (Audio CD)
Al jarreau does not sing the songs. He interpretes and fells them. As a brazilian, I feel he's done a great job singing "Mas que nada" in perfect Portuguese (!), swinging like a native born and grown brazilian guy. It is an indispensable CD if you want to listen to good music, relax and fell the atmosphere. Please, don't forget to dim out the lights...

A jazz/pop master teams up with an opera great, and more,
By
This review is from: Tenderness (Audio CD)
This live album showcases Jarreau's versatility as a jazz and pop vocalist, including a heart-melting rendition of his ballad "We Got By" and a beautiful performance of "My Favorite Things" featuring soprano Kathleen Battle. He takes on a number of Broadway and jazz standards here, including "Summertime" from "Porgy and Bess" and a sprightly, energized version of "Mas Que Nada". Jarreau fans need this album in their collections; for everyone else, it's a good way to hear a master of vocalese at work in the raw.

Al Jarreau- A Living Legend,
By Allen Carter (Newport News, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tenderness [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Once again Al Jarreau proves himself to be one of the foremost voices in the music industry and THE consumate musician with his album and Live video TENDERNESS. This video is 60 minutes of pure artistry and musicianship comprised of the creme de la creme of the music industry supporting one of the greatest assets Jazz, R&B and Pop music has ever seen. Owners of the TENDERNESS CD will really appreciate the fact that most of the performances on the Video are of different takes than the ones that exist on the album; showcasing, in my opinion, one of the most amazing facets of Jarreau's performing: his ability to make the same song a completely different musical experience no matter how many times he has performed it. Al Jarreau will always be at the top of my list as one of the best vocalists of our time, and I guarantee the same for your list if you view this Video for yourself! Enjoy!

"My Gift Is My Song . . . And This One's For You",
By
This review is from: Tenderness (Audio CD)
It's always nice to listen to a recording from Al Jarreau with his team of creative musicians pulling together their best efforts to make a dozen of performances truly stand out and have a tremendous impact to the ears of the listeners. This is especially true with this remarkable album released in 1994, "Tenderness." All the tracks were recorded in a live setting at Los Angeles studio, with the exception of "My Favorite Things," which was recorded in New York City. This is one of my absolute favorites from my music collection and my second Al Jarreau recording after Breakin' Away. I love its well-chosen material filled with some of the best songs ever written, to name a few, "My Favorite Things," a duet featuring Kathleen Battle who does a Julie Andrews-esque performance, "Try A Little Tenderness," "Summertime," "Your Song," "Wait For The Magic" and "Mas Que Nada."
Thanks to the combined talents of Al Jarreau (vocals), David Sanborn (alto sax), Joe Sample (piano), Michael Brecker (tenor sax), Steve Gadd (drums), Eric Gale (guitar), Paulinho da Costa (percussion), Marcus Miller (producer/keyboard/arranger) and many others involved in this project for making it as one of the best jazz albums ever recorded. Mr. Jarreau, a multi-Grammy awardee who possesses a unique and one of the most recognizable voices in the history of vocal jazz, interprets the material with such "tenderness," dedication, love and respect to the songwriters' art. His remarkable deliveries are some of the best ever interpretations for these timeless songs. One of my top favorites is a popular song by Elton John, "Your Song," which he co-wrote with Bernie Taupin. "I know it's not much but it's the best I can do My gift is my song and this one's for you And you can tell everybody this is your song It may be quite simple but now that it's done I hope you don't mind I hope you don't mind that I put down in words How wonderful life is while you're in the world" If you enjoyed this CD, you will definitely be delighted with Accentuate the Positive, Breakin' Away, Best of Al Jarreau and Givin' It Up, an awesome collaboration with a great guitarist/singer, George Benson. His latest compilation album, Love Songs was released recently. Although I have listened and enjoyed all the songs in the repertoire on various CDs, I still welcome it and certainly would love to add to my collection. Happy Listening! "Perhaps it is precisely the mystery of music's origins, which accounts for the charm of its beauty." ~ Robert Schumann, Romantic Era Classical composer/pianist ~

You MUST try a little Tenderness...,
By "kiwimuzo" (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tenderness (Audio CD)
In 'You Don't See Me' he's a fully-fledged percussion section; in 'Summertime' he's both sweet and violent; in 'Your Song' he's sincere; in 'Try a Little Tenderness' he's soooo sensual; in 'My Favourite Things' he's the strawberry to Kathleen Battle's champagne... is there nothing Al Jarreau can't do? This is one amazing album - a wonderful collection of some of the best tunes from a generation, carefully crafted into completely new artforms. And he sure knows how to pick his collaborators - Marcus Miller and Co make for a stunning line-up of muzos, and there's not a note out of place. A warm, inviting album that will surprise you with every new playing. This is essential listening!

A Diamond in the Rough...,

Not a well publicised CD but if you like Al Jarreau-old skool, you must get this one. I think this is one of his best, if not THE BEST CD Al has made. It is vintage Al Jarreau, with all of my old favorites. I cannot get enough of this one. Highly recommend it if you like the Al Jarreau of yester-year.

Must have dvd,vhs or laser disc,
By Kyle A. Alsberry (Tucson,AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tenderness (Audio CD)
I've owned this Cd since it's release, And just today viewed the Laser Disc of this performence. It is Al at his old school best!! Better than the Cd because you get to see him and the the band explode with tight licks and vocal gymnastics that IS Al Jarreau. Only the best songs were featured and after watching it,You see what a wonderful job Marcus Miller did in pushing MR Jarreau and the band into recording this classic.
If you what to see the master at work without all the frills of a live concert,Perched in an intimate setting of an recording session while he sings his heart out in front of a few lucky guest and friends. This is a must have for any Fan of Al Jarreau. Marcus Miller,Steve Gadd, Eric Gale,Joe Sample, David Sanbourn and the rest of the crew light up the studio as well. Watching this show will make you appreciate the Cd even more. [...]

He played a lot of the music from this album. What a treat! He is an Entertainer (as opposed to a "performer"). Listen to his interaction and involvement with the audience on "Try a Little Tenderness". Top notch talent included as a bonus! This is my favorite Al J album and one of my top 5. You want to melt a woman's heart? Pop the wine, light up the fireplace and slow dance to "Save Your Love for Me". If she doesn't think you're the most romantic man on earth - dump her! Anyway, buy this album and you won't be sorry.
