Biography

Formed in Greenwich Village in 1964 by beat poets Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg, The Fugs were a seminal rock group that paved the way for The Mothers of Invention, The Velvet Underground, and generations of alternative, underground, punk, political rock and freak-folk artists.

“We were a band determined to have an existence,” says Fugs founder and celebrated author Ed Sanders. “We are not our… Read more in Amazon's Fugs Store

Editorial Reviews

The Fugs were the original outsider artists. They released their first recordings on the legendary avant-garde label ESP-Disk in the mid 1960s before signing to Reprise. They combined jug band music, smutty rock 'n' roll, country ballads, Gregorian chants, canticles, Hebraic-tinged sing-songs, and bohemian poetry into a stoned stew of anti-establishment freakouts! This is their first Reprise release from 1967 reissued on 180 gram virgin vinyl with a deluxe gatefold reproduction of the original artwork. Features the classics Turn On/Tune In/Drop Out and Exorcising the Evil Spirits From the Pentagon October 21, 1967.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fugs rock, October 29, 2008
By
This review is from: Tenderness Junction [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
It was a night in 1967 and I was driving from Melbourne to Coral Gables, when the DJ introduced a song (The Garden Is Open), saying it was virtually the only cut on the album that he could play over the airwaves. I loved the song, which was not really clean, but the sexual references were not too overt. Spotting a mall, I pulled over and bought the album (I still have the vinyl) and played it for my wife as soon as I got home.

The most memorable songs, besides "The Garden", are "Knock, Knock" and "Wet Dream". "Wet Dream" is a spoof on the Platters style and is a fantasy about the "Queen of the Prom" sitting on the throne (and "sitting on my face"). There is a little gem of a Hare Krishna sung by Alan Ginsberg, with a nude picture of the poet by Richard Avedon, who did all the cover art.

To be fair, the B side is a bit tedious with a hymn to Aphrodite and the exorcising of demons from the Pentagon, but remember, it was 1967. Side A is worth the cost of the album.
