Editorial Reviews

The Fugs were the original outsider artists. They released their first recordings on the legendary avant-garde label ESP-Disk in the mid 1960s before signing to Reprise. They combined jug band music, smutty rock 'n' roll, country ballads, Gregorian chants, canticles, Hebraic-tinged sing-songs, and bohemian poetry into a stoned stew of anti-establishment freakouts! This is their first Reprise release from 1967 reissued on 180 gram virgin vinyl with a deluxe gatefold reproduction of the original artwork. Features the classics Turn On/Tune In/Drop Out and Exorcising the Evil Spirits From the Pentagon October 21, 1967.

It was a night in 1967 and I was driving from Melbourne to Coral Gables, when the DJ introduced a song (The Garden Is Open), saying it was virtually the only cut on the album that he could play over the airwaves. I loved the song, which was not really clean, but the sexual references were not too overt. Spotting a mall, I pulled over and bought the album (I still have the vinyl) and played it for my wife as soon as I got home.

The most memorable songs, besides "The Garden", are "Knock, Knock" and "Wet Dream". "Wet Dream" is a spoof on the Platters style and is a fantasy about the "Queen of the Prom" sitting on the throne (and "sitting on my face"). There is a little gem of a Hare Krishna sung by Alan Ginsberg, with a nude picture of the poet by Richard Avedon, who did all the cover art.

To be fair, the B side is a bit tedious with a hymn to Aphrodite and the exorcising of demons from the Pentagon, but remember, it was 1967. Side A is worth the cost of the album.

One of the advantages of growing up in England in the late 60's was that record shops would stock all sorts of albums - many of which, like this one never sold to the typical midland lads ... with the result that a few months after they arrived in the shops they would be available in the bargain bins. I picked up all the early Fugs albums this way - and I have to say that this album and "It Crawled into my Hand, Honest" really changed my life - for the better ...

The Fugs slipped under my parents radar and lead to my complete subversion - poetry, art, music, and laughter ... no small feat for a lad growing up in the shadows of the walls of Rugby School. They were such an influence in my early years as a young adult that it was quite strange to move to America several years later and find that the Fugs were virtually unknown.

The Fugs began their career as a true garage band. Their low fi recordings on ESP and Broadside bare testament to the sloppy performances and less than kosher recording quality. They eventually landed a contract with Reprise records (home of the rat pack).Unlikely label mates , the Fugs delivered a diverse selection of tunes about sex, drugs, rock and politics. There is a live recording of an exorcism where peace marchers lead by Ed Sanders attempted to exocism the evil spirits from the pentagon building. Also included is a hare krishna mantra, a 1950's style song titled Wet Dream about teen sexual fantasy. One great song called the Garden is Open featured electric violin and soarching guitar licks. The Fugs at this point had incorporated some real players into their fold.Dan Kootch was the violinist on this, and Ken Pine the guitarist. Another number,Dover Beach which they still play live, was adapted from a poem by Arnold. This chapter finds the Fugs getting their band sound together plus some alternative selections that diversify their output.

One of my all-time fave bands! I love their bold irreverence and melodic musical style! Long live Fugs forever, baby!
