Editorial Reviews

From the Director

Philippe De Broca (1933-) began his career as Assistant to Claude Chabrol, Francois Truffaut, and others. He quickly moved away from his roots in New Wave cinema to develop his own style of irreverent, eccentric comedies, made with gusto and technical skill. Some of his films include: "Cartouche" (1961), "L'Homme de Rio" (aka That Man From Rio, 1963) and "Le Magnifique" (1973) - all three starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. He also directed the international smash "King of Hearts" (1967). "Dear Detective" was released in US theatres in 1977. It is also referred to as "Dear Inspector".

Product Description

A charming comedy thriller about an unconventional female police detective investigating the murders of three senate deputies. A film full of inventive gags, serious 'policier' undertones, and touching romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Dear Detective" (AKA: " Dear Inspector"), May 12, 2007

This review is from: Tendre Poulet [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A very good production of a favorite French comedy (with sub-titles). An outstanding cast and a fun plot. A female French Chief Inspector of Police is much more interested in romantically pursuing a reluctant, liberal "anti- police" professor than solving a serial killing which occasionally interferes. Typical of "Pardon Mon Affaire" and "The Tall Blonde Man" era. What favorably impressed me about Amazon was that the original copy that I was sent was of rather poor quality. When I contacted the seller, despite some initial well intentioned confusion in which they kept offering a full refund if I so desired, they rapidly sent a replacement copy in excellent condition, at no charge.

5.0 out of 5 stars french characters, November 27, 2004

Ph. Noiret has a voice like Morgan Freeman has one: music and distinction in it. Annie Girardot has a temper like Woopie Goldberg. If you like parisian streets, french humour... and tenderness.
