Easy, informative read on TN history,
This review is from: Tennesseans & Their History (Paperback)
I purchased this book for a course on TN history. I've found it an easy read but written in a manner that captivates and holds your attention. Not your typical boring history book but instead a well written timeline of the state of TN's history.

Written in a conversational style with text broken up here and there with maps, photographs, and sidebars, this is a book that undergraduate students taking a class in Tennessee history and armchair historians will find useful and well-worth reading.Content is arranged chronologically: 1. Tennessee's Beginnings; 2. Frontier Times; 3. Southwest Territory; 4. Early Statehood Years; 5. Antebellum Politics, Economy and Society; 6. The Civil War; 7. Reconstruction; 8. The New South; 9. The Era of Reform; 10. Modern Times; 11. Depression and War; 12. The Civil Rights Era; and 13. The 1960s to Centuries End. With each chapter followed by 15-20 "Suggested Readings" and the book's text followed by a very good index. Two of the authors - Paul H. Bergeron and Stephen V. Ash -- are on the History faculty at the University of Tennessee, and the third - Jeanette Keith - is a professor of history at Bloomsburg University. All three have published books previously on Tennessee history, thus they come to this text as confident, seasoned writers of Tennessee's rich and vibrant history. Highly recommended for academic and public library collections with any interest in Southern and Tennessee History. R. Neil Scott Middle Tennessee State University
