Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-- An introduction to Vermont's geography, history, government, economy, industry, culture, historic sites, and famous people. The book is profusely illustrated with full-color, postcard-quality photographs of many of the state's most scenic places. There is only one picture of an urban area, and nothing to show the small amount of ethnic and cultural diversity that can be found in the state, although the text notes some examples. Relevant maps and useful facts and figures are appended. Only the briefest mention is made of the major crises facing Vermont today--poverty and the protection of the environment. These issues threaten the ``independent lifestyle'' that the author praises as a reward for those living here. Poverty does not allow an idyllic lifestyle, and nowhere is this made clear. Instead, readers are left with a romantic, idealized view of the state and its residents. For a more realistic picture of what the independent lifestyle means to a dairy farmer and his family, see Nancy Graff's The Strength of the Hills: A Portrait of a Family Farm (Little, 1989). --Virginia Golodetz, St. Michael's College, Winooski, VT
