Book Description

July 15, 1995
In 1916, a young boy, Nathan Longfort, is on the funeral train bearing the body of his grandfather, the Senator, from Washington, D.C., to Knoxville, Tennessee. The memory of this journey will haunt him for the rest of his life. On this trip, he meets the enigmatic Cousin Aubrey, a man of "irregular kinship," the black sheep of the Longfort clan. As the years pass, and Aubrey disappears into the world, Nathan begins to compulsively collect rumors about his faraway life—as Nathan's mother's first true love, a charmer of European society, a Don Juan, a worldly success—and sees it in stinging contrast to his own unfulfilled dreams of becoming an artist. Much later in life, the two men—now old—will meet again.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Pulitzer Prize-winner Taylor tells a story of memory and family bonds in the South, spanning much of the century.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Here is another smooth, sylish Southern story from Pulitzer Prize winner Taylor. Much of the novel reads like a memoir, telling of a man's lifelong search for a relative who disappeared from the family when the narrator, Nathan Longfort, was a boy. Cousin Aubrey, the natural child of Nathan's senator grandfather's brother, dropped from view after the old man's funeral. Ever since, Nathan has wondered what became of him, occasionally believing that he has glimpsed him at family funerals. Finally, retired and with grown children, he has a chance to reconnect. Nathan's search for his cousin and for the measure of his own life becomes an introspective novel that should please Taylor's many admirers.
