Mr. Ray gives many good tidbits about the Tennessee Territory and often can provide you with new clues as to where to look for your ancestors. Unfortunately, he never bothered to document any of his sources and is thus, unacceptible as a "best evidence" book if you are wishing to join such societies as the DAR/SAR or other historical societies, which require everything to be closely documented.
I must say, it is nicely indexed and has some photos of the areas. I simply wish he had taken the time to create the proper bibliography for his book which named his source as many times, he is the only source for some of the information cited.
If you are researching in the Tennessee area and stuck on a line, I would suggest you try to obtain a copy of this book to possibly get a new sense of direction. Its a good clue book but as a source for pure research, the book is not what you want.

Mr. Ray's book has been a starting place for much of my genealogy research for over 20 years. As noted by another, his sources are rarely cited and seem to be from interviews more than from empirical data. The notes about each Tennessee county and its beginnings could be helpful if, for example, family legend suggests that a person was from Stewart County, the person could actually have been from Montgomery County. Stewart County was from from Montgomery County lands in 1803. So if your ancestors were from that area of Tenn. before 1803, you would need to check the surrounding counties. A Tennessee map in the front shows all counties for quick reference. After I checked the index for families I was searching, I put the book away for a number of years. Recently, as other family lines/surnames have appeared, I have gone back to Tennessee Cousins and found leads that I missed the first times I searched through the book. There are several references to family originally from North Carolina and Virginia especially. The index is by surname without given names, which makes looking for a specific individual tedious; but I suppose we should be glad to at least have the surname index.

A great book for researchers with Tennessee ancestors. I found a lot about one of my direct ancestors in this book.
