Editorial Reviews

The hallmark of the first Tennessee Ernie Ford JASMINE CD ("The Real Thing", JASMCD 3501) was how warm and sincere Ernie came across, and the feeling is enhanced with this fresh collection which finds him mixing with some of the great female vocal talent of the period. Whether by way of introduction, singing in duet, or subsequent praise, Tennessee Ernie simply radiates warmth and cosiness. In fact, many of his 'co-stars' had already recorded duets with Ernie, as it was the practice of his record label, CAPITOL, to pair him with suitable female singers. What a combination! The warmth, sincerity and humour of Tennessee Ernie Ford plus the pick of some of the finest female singers from the period. Whether singing solo or in duet with Ernie, all the girls give great performances, made all the more interesting by the simple Country band type backing. A new JASMINE CD for Country and general nostalgia fans alike, 27 tracks to enjoy over and over See Also: JASMCD3501 - The Real Thing! This is a marvelous introduction to the crossover appeal of Tennessee Ernie Ford as he teams with top-notch female recording artists performing standards on his radio show in the 1950s. Many of the songs on this collection were considered dated and old-fashioned even during the 1950s, so many may seem really dated today--but that's part of the appeal to me. I just love hearing those old chestnuts performed by artists who really appreciate them like Tennessee Ernie Ford does. The collection consists with one welcome exception (a great Tennessee Ernie Ford rendition of "Sleepy Time Gal") of female solos and duets with Tennessee Ernie Ford. Standouts include "The Lady From 29 Palms" sung by the great big band singer Helen Forrest, a rare recording of the Depression era favorite "Potatoes Are Cheaper" sung by Tennessee Ernie and Lou Dinning (of the Dinning Sisters), the novelty tune "Take It Back And Change It For A Boy" sung by Bucky Tibbs, and--my favorite--the almost spoken "If You Don't Know No Common Folks" sung by the sadly forgotten Roberta Lee. The accompanying band headed by Billy Liebert is fantastic as well. To sum up, this collection will surely bring a smile and an occasional chuckle to your day.

This is a great collection. If you're looking for a case of Ernie Songs, you're out of luck. But if you wonder what Ernie's Radio Programs sounded like...Here's your chance to listen in. Ernie's introduction to the songs and duets and closing comedy make this an excellent choice.
