A former professional player on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour, Annacone reached as high as the number 12 world ranking in singles and the number 3 ranking in doubles. In doubles he won the Australian Open in 1985 and played in the US Open final in 1990.
He has been head of men's tennis at the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), a player representative on the ATP Board of Directors, and has served as managing director of the United States Tennis Association's (USTA) High Performance Division. Annacone is the senior instruction editor for TENNIS Magazine.
