5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
I personally have read this entire series an I think it is wonderful. The books just draw you in as you go throught the pages one by one. This book starts out with the story of Jim Hawkins at 13 and his lack of desire to live the gospel. When he goes to a Home Teaching appointment with his dad and is told by Garth Plimpton about an ancient undiscovered wall painting...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This product advertised that it was the entire book on tape, which it was not. The book is on 4 cassettes and only 2 were sent. Also, the cover said it was tapes 1 and 2, which it was not - it was tapes 3 and 4 so I can't even listen to the first half of the book because it only included the second half of the book. Definitely disappointed and probably will never order...

I personally have read this entire series an I think it is wonderful. The books just draw you in as you go throught the pages one by one. This book starts out with the story of Jim Hawkins at 13 and his lack of desire to live the gospel. When he goes to a Home Teaching appointment with his dad and is told by Garth Plimpton about an ancient undiscovered wall painting he found depicting a group of people pictured in white being chased into a rainbow colored hole by people depicted in a darker color. Then, shortly thereafter he hears the legend of the Rainbow Room in Frost Cave. From there Garth, Jim, and his little sister Jenny are launched into an adventure into the land of the Nephites where they fight in wars, Serve as interpreters and live an adventure they won't soon forget (unless they tell).

4.0 out of 5 stars About "Tennis Shoes Among The Nephites", March 25, 2003

About "Tennis Shoes Among The Nephites"

"Tennis Shoes Among The Nephites" is a wonderful book. It starts off talking about a kid named Jim Hawkins that is a church boy but doesn't like to go to church. But then there is the other character named Garth Plimpton. He, on the other hand, is totally opposite of Jim. Jim is just a kid with a bad attitude. What's more, is that he enjoys having a bad attitude - about everything - especially about church. But Garth Plimpton is a fanatic of church. He's spent so much time studying that scriptures and thick books that he can not carry on a normal conversation with the other kids. That's why he is considered a nerd.
Through an unusual chain of events though, these two opposites become fast friends. It all began when Garth told Jim the simple truth:
"They really existed once, you know."
"Who?" Jim asked.
"Nephites," Garth replied. "Every character in the Book of Mormon ate, slept, died, and was buried."
That statement, taken for granted before, would soon echo deeply into the two boys' minds - because they were on the trail of a chilling secret. At the root of this secret was a faded Indian legend that old men told to children to make their eyes grow big. As Garth and Jim put the pieces of the puzzle together, they accidentally stumble upon a mysterious passageway, hurling them into another world - an Ancient American world.
As Garth and Jim are hurled into this weird world, Jim's little sister, who came along and got thrown into the Ancient world, gets taken away by the Lamanites. So they have to save her while other bad and scary things happen like when some guys said that they would kill the captain of the Nephites, Captain Moroni.
This book was very enjoyable and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was hard to put down at times but wasn't the best book I have ever read. If I were to rate this book out of 5 stars, I would rate it a definite 4.

I loved this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is a Mormon or researching the church. It really gave me a better understanding of the Book of Mormon and the times that the story line covered. When I read in the Bookof Mormon about the characters in the story I felt like I knew them better because they seemed more real to me. This was a very good book for people of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars These Tennis Shoes Rock!, January 23, 2007
A Kid's Review

Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites
A book by Chris Heimerdinger
The Tennis Shoes series is originally about a boy who travels back in time to an ancient civilization called the Nephites (a people whose writings make the "Book of Mormon", which is a book the religious people called "Mormons" or the "L.D.S." people base their beliefs). Armed with modern gadgets, the boy, named Jim, his sister Jenny, and their enemy-turned-friend, Garth, are out for the adventure of their lives.
When Garth finds an ancient cave, which he believes holds hieroglyphs made by the Nephites, he begs Jim and Jenny to come along. When they reluctantly agree, they find themselves sucked into a whirlpool of a lake, which they are manipulated by and finally spewed out on a waterfall. Where they are, they have no idea.
The three-some suddenly realize they are in a world where there is no electricity, no cars, no boats, not anything! Jim finds out that they are in the world of the Nephites. How can they get home? How can they make friends with these nomadic people? How can they make sure that they don't get eaten by wild beasts? Read this book and you will be hooked until the very end!
"Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites" is only the first of ten books! In the next nine, Jim's family and friends also find this historic cave, but it doesn't only take them to the land of the Nephites! Read these books to find adventures in Mexico, ancient Rome, the Mayan empire, ancient Babylon, and much, much more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great For Mormon Children!!, April 11, 2004
This review is from: Tennis Shoe Adventure series: Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites (Paperback)
I liked the premise of this book... a couple of kids going back in time among the Nephites and Lamanites of old to experience their hardships, learn to apply touch lessons into their lives, and learn to love The Book of Mormon. This story focuses on the time a few years after the Title of Liberty was raised by Captain Moroni.

This is the story of Jim who is in need of a spiritual experience to increase his faith and bring him back into the fold of the church. He has help from his friend, Garth, a Book of Mormon expert, as they accidentally go back in time while searching some old caves. Jim's little sister (Jenny) comes along as well and gets kidnapped by the Lamanites. Jim befriends many common Book of Mormon heroes as they try to save Jenny and get back home.

For children over 9 or 10, this is a GREAT read. It really brings the Book of Mormon to life. For adults, well, I found it a little bit childish for my tastes but I have heard that the following books are more mature. I'm looking forward to reading more about these types of adventures. My only real complaint was that the ending seemed to wrap itself up too quickly. It was almost like the author was tired of writing the book and just wrote to get it over with in a hurry.

This review is from: Tennis Shoe Adventure series: Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites (Paperback)
I got this book for Christmas one year and thought, "Great, another church book from my parents," and it sat on my shelf for months. When I finally got around to reading it, I immediately went looking for more and found the next two, and have kept my collection "up-to-date" through the 6th book. This series ties with "The Work and the Glory" in my book. GET IT!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I thought this book was a wonderful, spectaular book., September 7, 1998
By A Customer
This book was absolutely great. I had heard one of my friends mention it, and at that time I disregarded it, and just recently another one of my friends mentioned that she was waiting for the conclusion of the most recent book. When I went to my church bookstore, I decided to give the book a try. I got so caught up in the book, that I felt I was really there in Nephite times. I felt myself become closer to the Book of Mormon characters I have grown up with, and I felt as if I could reach out and touch them. I can't wait to read the next in the series!!!! This is one book I would definitely read again and recommend to others!!!
