2.0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I didn't find that this book met my expectations. I've read better and don't understand all the hoopla about it... On the other hand my father loved it and is buying copies for his friends. So there you go, a mixed review. I still think the Flaming Turkey is the be all end all of turkey hunting stories.
This doesn't compare in my opinion.

It should be a crime to turkey hunt without reading this one! Tom Kelly's work here is simply marvelous. In depth he illustrates what makes a turkey hunter tick and why this individual is compelled to rise rise each and every morning before dawn to go in search of the wild turkey. He tells of some hilarious adventures of his own in the Alabama woods. Though it is not a "how-to" book, any hunter can learn something from this one. This book can be read from cover to cover without the thought of putting it down. As for myself, I read it each year before the season and goose bumps rise on my skin each time. It's that good! The introduction of the book says it best when it reads, "...the book proposes to let you hear, just one time and however faintly, what so many others hear with clarity and purpose all their lives, that dim and distant beat of that other drum."

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on turkey hunting ever written, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Tenth Legion (Hardcover)
Tom Kelly is the Mark Twain of our time. I have read this book more times than any other book save the Bible. The stories are so well written that I slow down my reading so that I can admire the way he plies his craft. Every hunter should have this book in his library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom hit the nail on the head, September 29, 1998

Tom brought back a lot of memories in the way he described Deer Hunting in the seventies. He also gave a lot of useful information on Turkey Hunting. I really enjoyed his humor in his tales. Anyone thinking of Turkey Hunting should read this book first. Anyone that has bee hunting for a while would also find useful information in here.

Tom Kelly has a great dry wit and it comes out very well in this book. I refer in particular to his opinions on deer hunters. A great quick read for anyone who enjoys turkey hunting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Kellys Best, January 28, 2012
This is Tom Kellys best book. It is humorous and any turkey hunter will appreciate it. Tom Kelly mixes humor with his observations of people and the wild turkey in a way no one else can.

I read this book in my turkey blind last season waiting for wild turkeys to show up. I laughed out loud a few times!

This is a great book for any turkey hunter. Tom Kellys books are all good, but this one is great.

Both an experienced hunter and novice hunter will learn a lot about the wild turkey and the characters who chase them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Tenth Legion, July 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or have been hunting for years, in my eyes this book is a must read for every hunter. I would even go so far as to say that it should be given to everyone who goes through the State/Federal hunting safety and conservation course in order to get your hunting licence. Mr. Kelly presents topics and opinions that really thought provoking. I plan to read it through each year before Spring Turkey season. I have recommended this book to all my hunting friends. A must read and a must have for your hunting book collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read . . ., October 15, 2008
A wise old turkey hunter told me about this book in 1988, and I had misplaced that piece of paper until just recently. My mistake. Anyone who hunts turkeys or is associated with people who hunt turkekys will enjoy this book. The author has a way with his words and examples that will make you want to read the book from cover-to-cover without setting it down. It is a must read for both the turkey hunter and non-hunter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Turkey Hunter, June 1, 2008

Enjoyed this book. The author can use harsh language occasionally, but his insite into turkey hunting is great. I really enjoyed his humor and definitely learned some things that I'm going to try. Of all the tips he gave, the one I think is most significant is to learn how to shoot off-hand. His best joke is how turkeys have rewritten Murphy's Law!
