Book Description

2017: BACK FROM THE SUN

For aeons, Earth has been ravaged by so-called natural disasters. Now we know the primary cause: overharvesting of our limited resources--not by humans, but by the residents of our solar system's tenth planet.

Since before the birth of humanity, every two thousand years, this dark planet has plundered our world. But in 2017, Earth fought back. Now thousands of aliens face starvation. To survive, they must harvest Earth when their orbit brings them back from behind the sun.

But the humans are not waiting for Earth to become as parched and barren as Mars. Every nuclear weapon has been aimed at the Tenth Planet. Their ultimate goal--to blow the Tenth Planet to oblivion.

In part two of the Tenth Planet saga, cutting-edge science and high drama combine in an adventure that questions humanity's history, our place in the universe . . . and our very right to exist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel to The Tenth Planet, October 9, 2003

What can I say, Smith has produced another great book. The Tenth Planet: Oblivion continues the story of Earth's struggle for survival against the aliens from the Tenth Planet.

The first battle has been lost, but Earth has finally gotten its act together and is ready to retaliate. Every nuclear bomb and rocket has been launched to intercept the alien menace as it rounds our sun on its way back toward Earth.

Great book and very easy reading. I read books one and two in a day. I'm starting book three right now!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pure escapism, July 9, 2001
Although published as three separate books, the Tenth Planet trilogy should really have been released as a single compilation. None of the three books are able to stand on their own. As a set, they are a light but engaging read. These books are pure escapist fun, with stereotypical characters, some plausible pseudo science and a fast paced plot. As long as you are not expecting great literature like Gene Wolfe and are prepared for sci fi that is more in the spirit of Edgar Rice Burroughs, you will enjoy this series.

In the second book, Earth has learned the terrible secret of the tenth planet. Not content merely to defend themselves against the rapacious Malmuria, Earth breaks out it's stock of antiquated nuclear weapons and prepares to take the battle to the Malmurians on their home turf.

If you enjoyed this series then you will probably like the Heritage Trilogy by Ian Douglas, which is far better written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not excellent!, June 9, 2000
The first book of the trilogy was excellent. This book could excel, too, but for the fact that it stops in the middle of the action. I do not mind waiting for "The Final Assault", but "Oblivion" does not really have an ending. The editors should have waited until the story was complete. Nevertheless, the story is well written and full of tension. I am definitely waiting anxiously for the third book to appear. I think it is very good that you do not have a clue as to how the story will end. The tension is kept up. Hurry up Dean and Kristine!
