Book Description

10 and up5 and up
Calwyn used to be exceptional. She was the most talented of all the chanters of Tremaris, and she’d fought hard to become their leader. But then there was an accident, and the magic inside her went silent. Where there once was power, now there is nothing. Her whole life–the future she had planned with Darrow–has somehow slipped away.
All Calwyn wants to do is limp home and hide. But she can’t, because although her power is gone and taken all happiness with it, her responsibilities seem to grow every day. There’s a sickness attacking the chanters of Tremaris, a sickness that seems to have infected the land itself. And even though Calwyn is now just an ordinary girl with no magic left in her, she can’t sit by and watch the world die.
This is a story about tremendous courage and the strength of spirit that life sometimes demands. But it’s also a story of hope, because sometimes when everything you know has failed you, there is another way. Sometimes there is a tenth power–if only you can find it.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up–In the final installment of this trilogy, Calwyn, who once had several of the nine singing magic powers (called chantments), has lost all of her extraordinary gifts. Bitterly, she returns to Antaris with hopes of recuperation, but instead finds that a number of the chanters have been affected with a deadly snow-sickness. Entrusted by the dying high priestess with knowledge of a wheel that contains the tenth power to heal the world, Calwyn sets out with her companions to track down Samis, a wicked sorcerer whom she had believed was dead, and wrest from him the missing half of the wheel. On her perilous journey, she discovers a long-lost relative, delves deeper into the conflicted relationship with her chanter friend Darrow, and discovers new gifts that lead her reluctantly toward her destiny as the Singer of All Songs. As in the other two books, the detailed descriptions of the settings and the natures of the various chantments are what give the story the richness of elaborate tapestries. There are many characters to keep track of, and while Calwyns friendship with the healer Halasaa has become more fleshed out, her romance with Darrow doesnt have the intense chemistry demanded of the narrative, and her later relationship with Samis strains credulity. However, there is much to enjoy and ponder in a trilogy that strives to ask hard, thoughtful questions, even if it cant always answer them.–Farida S. Dowler, Mercer Island Library, WA

From Booklist

Gr. 7-10. At the opening of the final installment of Constable's well-regarded Singer of All Songs trilogy, 18-year-old Calwyn returns to the ice priestesses' enclave to mourn her nine lost powers of chantment (magic worked through song). There, hints about a mysterious Tenth Power send Cal on a final quest to cure the "sickness at the fabric of the world," responsible for a deadly disease infecting her soul mate; for the eternal winter that has gripped Tremaris; and, it seems, for Cal's sense of dislocation from all she loves. True to classic heroic themes, Cal must face humanity's darker afflictions--temptation, nihilism, devastating grief--before successfully channeling her newly recouped powers into an intense ritual of reconciliation and healing. A few elements feel artificial, such as the curiously sf-oriented back story for Tremaris and the Age-of-Aquarius tones of its magical resurrection, but others, like the workings of the Tenth Power, have the ring of essential truth. Questions about Calwyn's family history are answered here for series fans, who will be eager to see book one's vulnerable, callow adolescent arrive at both fuller self-knowledge and her long-awaited destiny. 4.0 out of 5 stars Wrapping Things Up, February 12, 2006
By
I loved the first two books in the series and certainly enjoyed this one too, with the reservation that some elements seemed to be rushed through. While there were plot developments I had completely failed to expect and the return of characters I had been pleased to see the back of, by the time we got to the final scenes they seemed glossed over when some quite significant events were occuring. Perhaps this trilogy ought to have been a quartet? Still, this one joins the other two in earning place on my crowded book shelves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful ending that made me close to tears!, June 28, 2006
I kind of found this whole series in a weird way. My mom bought me the second book at my school's book fair, little did I know that it was a sequel. I fell in love with the book and quickly got Singer of All Songs once I learned of it.

I was fascinated by this world, especially the characters. NEVER had I been so caught up in a book because of how the characters appealed to me. My favorite thing most of all was definitely Calwyn and Darrow, because I'm a sucker for romance. ; ]

When I got the ending to the book, the beginning caught and held me until the very last page. I think I read it in exactly one day. Nonetheless, I loved the ending - it was a tad cliche, I will say that, and there was one bit to it I didn't really understand (readers will most likely know what this twist is, it is a death) and it seemed really off to me. But the very last page was just chilling. I had literally been waiting for the last chapter's two events all throughout the series.

Despite some of the complaints already said about this third book, I LOVED IT and I'm not afraid to say that. It left me dazzled and still holds me to this moment. If you are really a true fan of this series, you should love what the ending has in store for you. 5 stars.
