Fresh and energetic.,

I enjoyed listening to all 11 tracks on this CD; each one was a treat for the mind, body, and soul, not to mention my ears. As one track seamlessly blends into the next you realize that the goal seems to be just that, create a listening experience that has a beginning and an end with no place in between that has any radical transitions or changes that forces you to adjust your thought process and overall mood.
Backed by producer/guitarist Paul Brown and a few other pros, including keyboardists Ricky Peterson and Gregg Karukas, Roberto Vally on bass, and Sergio Gonzalez on percussion, she shows a real affinity for Latin jazz. It's not surprising since she grew up in a house filled with Latin music, and considers it a vital part of her Mexican-American heritage. The CD includes original material and a few covers. Some of Jessy J's original songs are "Tequila Moon", "Sin Ti-With Out You", "Fiesta Velada", "Running Away", and "PB n J". She covers brilliantly two Latin staples "Besame Mucho" and Sergio Mendez's "Masquenada". Every track has a different mood and tempo while offering pure smooth jazz with Latin rudiments to give it that certain Jassy flavor that is prevalent on this enjoyable release. "Tequila Moon" brings Jessy J's fresh and inspired energy with vibrant exotic twists to the contemporary jazz world. Her sax playing and her vocals encourage rhythms to come forth from other instruments and that is why she is an enchanting composer and artist. You do not have to be a star to shine in the world of music but Jassy is one of brightest and the most promising and in the world of contemporary jazz. Rhythm & Romance

What can I say about new sax sensation Jessy J and TEQUILA MOON that will get you as excited about her as I am? Well, let's start with her bio... Ms. J was born in Portland, Oregon, raised in Hemet, California... of Mexican-American heritage... she began playing piano at age four... and she's a USC grad with a degree in Jazz Studies. This young woman lives with intentionality, personal discipline and persistence. Which led to Paul Brown (yes, the Paul Brown of fifty #1 Smooth Jazz hits) deciding to produce this album! Most importantly, the Jessy J sound is what will end up getting you. She soulfully caresses a supremely beautiful tone and feeling out of her instrument, whether it's her tenor, soprano, flute or voice (she sings "Mas Que Nada" in Portuguese and "Besame Mucho" in Spanish). Then there's the music itself, including seven originals, five of which were co-written with Brown. The first single, the title track, is already near the top of the Smooth Jazz charts! As I listen to TEQUILA MOON, I wonder if this is how I'd have felt on a first listen to, say, Boney James, or Dave Koz, or Grover Washington, Jr., and I'm thinking, "yes" because she's that good! This is one of those cases where you just know... from the music and delivery to her personal drive and dedication to excellence... there is absolutely no stopping this empowered performer. Join us in watching her Smooth Jazz star rise to the absolute top! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN

Nice and Fresh New Sound!!!,

I first saw Jessy J at The Catalina Jazz Fest which was a snapshoot of very great young female sax musician. I notice her CD was released, I was ready to buy, but notice one of the reviews on this page was negative. But as they say "don't believe everything you read," because this CD is excellent!!! Glad I bought it anyway for my trip to San Diego. I was at the Del Coronado Hotel all weekend and I couldn't take Jessy J Cd's out of the CD Player. We really enjoyed the cuts Tequila Moon, Turquoise Street, PB n J and Running Away. Also I really like the vocals on Mas Que Nada and Poetry Man, re-done very nice. I thought the musical arrangement on all tracks on the CD were well done. I read it was done by Paul Brown. Also it didn't hurt the choice of Greg Karukas and Rick Peterson on keys and using all top musicians. I came to the conclusion that the reason it sounds so good, that she took the time to get quality musicians on this CD, which is a BIG PLUS!!! I thought the CD is kind of Exotic, Sexy and Easy Listening and loved the sound of her Saxophone. I got a news update from Spaghetti she will be there next week, can't wait until the show. If you are looking for a new fresh sound, Grab This One!!! DJ HotTrotter

What a great and smooth sounding debut album from Jessy J. I heard the samples here from Amazon while I was searching for new jazz cd's and I knew that it would be a great-sounding composition. When I received this cd, I fell in love with the nice & exotic vibes from the sax, and was impressed to hear the lovely melodies produced by Jessy, full of musical coolness with a fresh appeal. This is a great smooth jazz cd, with a little touch of a spanish feel on a few tracks. I believe if you are a true jazz lover like myself, then this will definitely bring satisfaction to your ears. Perfect for a couple on a romantic night out, at home relaxing, somewhere on an island where it's bright & sunny or at a beach watching the sun go down. Whatever the scenerio is for you, I guarantee that you will enjoy the wonderful melodies on "Tequila Moon." Don't hesitate to buy, grab a copy, relax & enjoy!

Loved Jesse J's sax playing the first time I heard "Tequila Moon" on a local jazz station. I had to have that song for my colection. The rest of the album did not disappoint. Hope she produces another album soon.

Jessy brings a fresh new approach to the classics like Sin Ti along with originals like Tequila Moon her hot new single. My Brother and I had the pleasure of working with Jessy on video profile for a radio station in LA and found her to be delight to be around. She's bright and talented and has a great sense of humor. Check out the video interview along with her performance of Tequila Moon [...]
I love this CD and would recommend it to anyone who loves jazz with a latin flare.....even my 70 year old Father enjoyed it and can't wait to tell his friend about Jessy's version of Sin Ti....now that's music that appeals to all ages!

One of my favorite smooth jazz albums by far.
Listen to "Mas Que Nada", "Fiesta Velada" and "Spanish Nights". It'll probably give you a clean idea of the album in brief. Cheers

Not Just A Pretty Face...,
By Lady T "Soul & Jazz Music Lover" (Georgia) - See all my reviews

Not just a pretty face, Jessica can really play! This CD is smooth and simple... and not simple in a bad way... simple in the sense that it's calming and easy... not a lot of LOUDNESS going on... something that can be played at the office while you get your job done, or at the house while you're grilling out. I initially heard this CD in its entirety on my favorite jazz station WJZZ, Atlanta, web site and fell in love with it. Now I need to purchase a copy for my jazz collection. I would highly recommend this CD for those jazz lovers who like the smooth, soothing sound of the sax!

Heard an interview on KKSF with Jessy J. where they played snippets of her tracks and discussed her recording with Paul Brown and teaming up with Greg Karukas. The sampling immediately caught my ears, and I purchased the CD the next day. I cannot find fault with ANY of the 11 tracks. Jessy has a soft, soulful and accomplished sound accompanied by excellent background and laced with sexy Latin rhythms. The subtle complexities of the recordings make the tracks seem to flow effortlessly. My favorites are Tequila Moon, Sin Ti, Fiesta Velada and Running Away, but I thoroughly enjoy and play this CD straight through, a lot! I highly recommend this for great listening, and am eagerly awaiting Jessy's next collection.

pretty girl with sax,
By
This review is from: Tequila Moon (Audio CD)
Another pretty girl with a saxophone. Is this a trend in Jazz? The pretty girl gets 5stars and the saxophone playing- 3stars which averages out to be 4*. I personally don't play the saxophone and can not appreciate the difficulties or the ease of trying to play this instrument but if you are a jazz fan specially the coltrane, coleman hawkins kind, you probably have a good idea what good sax sounds like. Now back to "Tequila Moon" Jessy's first album, it's easy listening, new wave jazz fluff with a decidedly bossa nova samba beat, should've been titled "Capirinha Moon" but it's not entirely fluff, her cover of Phobe Snow's "Poetry Man" is, well, surprisingly original! And she was brave enough to do a jazzy version of Jorge Bem's "Mas Que Nada" Overall it's a nice CD to listen to. Jessy J, (what's the J stand for?) from Hemet, California is, I guess, the newest member in the "Girl With Sax" Jazz Musician Club. Moderately recommended, check out Candy Dulfer or Pamela Williams for a better prespective.
