Book Description

April 1, 2009
People say that the most successful homes are the most sustaining and invigorating to live in, or even just to visit. This is true of Barton Court, the house in Berkshire where Terence Conran has made his country home since 1977. It has been a family home, a center to his Habitat Design business, a factory and studio for producing commercial and domestic furniture, a laboratory for testing his recipes and writing cookery books and has a working fruit, vegetable and herb garden, supplying produce for his restaurants. Through  the objects that Terence has collected, and the things he finds on his travels, we can learn, not only about  the man behind a multi-million dollar empire, but the processes that stimulate his creativity and the sources of his inspiration.

In this part visual biography, part guided tour Terence Conran explains what he sees and what he should look for in good design and just what has inspired him through his varied career.

2.0 out of 5 stars More of a visual autobiography than a design book May 16, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I expected a survey of Conran's design work and instead found it to be an indulgent diary of his personal life and tastes. For the right audience, this may be a great read or a great gift. For me, it was a disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring indeed! July 27, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I just got to survey this tome of Mr. Conran's personal inspirations at a friend of a friend's home this afternoon, and in turn was inspired myself by the wide variety of influences, creative resources and personal insight shared inside this beautifully curated book. As an icon of modern design, it is no surprise this book runs the full spectrum between all realms of design, reflective of the career and works Conran has help shape during the span of his still productive life. One reviewer criticized this book as being too reflective of Conran's personal taste, but I'd argue to understand Conran's work is to understand his tastes, his life and all the elements which all come together during the creative process. If anything, the strength of this book is its undistilled, yet reflective perspective of a man who finds inspiration anywhere and everywhere.
