I searched for a similar box but couldn't find much. You could use a rubbermaid tub but it wouldn't have latches and a padlock hole like this and most other trunks are antique styled or at least as expensive as this one. Also It's assembled in the USA and it is the right dimensions for checked baggage.

I have 2 of these to store camping gear, works fine and very happy with but the latches will rust very easy (mine is not stored outside but have gotten wet due to gear). Would recommend but wal-mart has these for $15 dollars or so why pay more and deal with shipping?

If you are getting this for storing and moving around tools, or any heavy components...think again. It can hold heavy objects as long as you have no intention of rolling it or moving it while they are inside. For myself it ended up being just an overpriced storage trunk with the added advantage of wheels(that were not strategically placed for anyone over 5'2" to pull), and the place for a lock (keep in mind plastic used is NOT durable, so a metal padlock I'd imagine would break through the plastic with a couple good twists. One thing good about the soft plastic material is you can over-stuff it and it easily stretches to close evenly at the latches. Unless you can afford to burn the cash, go to the dollar store, they are coming out with wheels on their storage bins now and much better colors.

We purchased this item for my son to use for summer camp. Although it IS a sturdy footlocker, it didn't give us enough room to fit everything. After purchasing this footlocker we saw it for half the price at Lowe's and even cheaper at Walmart (not to mention what we paid in shipping). We were disappointed but I guess it pays to shop around. For the price we paid online I would recommend shopping around first.

Some reviewers here are comparing this to WalMart's footlocker they sell. Its not the same one. I have both and they are vastly different in design. For example, the WalMart brand doesn't have any metal parts in the hinge and is only secured with plastic tabs. Therefore the lock is futile. This J. Terence footlocker has a more efficient way of stacking with the large protuding tabs on top at both ends. The WalMart one is small indentations to act tongue-and-groove fitment with the footlocker on top or below. We've taken this footlocker on airlines repeatedly to our other home in S. America and packed it to the brim. The airlines recognize this footlocker as acceptable dimensions. It has never fallen apart or broken. We simply use zip-ties instead of locks so the TSA can gain entry easily if necessary.

If a large plastic storage tub doesn't quite fit the bill and you'd prefer something with a hinged lid and latches, then this might be what you're looking for. It isn't anymore durable that a Rubbermaid tub and, when full, isn't that easy to move around.

I have three of these and want to get two more. I use them for packing very, very heavy power cords and they do great. They can take the weight. I did break a hinge off by not having the cover closed correctly. That was my fault and I fixed it by putting a new rivet through.
A great thing about these is that they stack together. That helps when I put several on a dolly. |
