5.0 out of 5 stars Terlingua Ale, March 5, 2005
By
This review is from: Terlingua Ale (Paperback)
I just finished reading TERLINGUA ALE by Margaret Searles. I loved its fast pace, memorable characters, tightly woven and action-packed plot. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this novel to mystery fans, especially those who love to travel.

Feisty Margaret Millet and glamorous Judy Hark are certifiable snoops! Ms. Searles' plot hooked me from the beginning. What started out, as a relaxing vacation at a Texan RV park nestled along the banks of the Rio Grande River, quickly became a mystery to solve when a corpse washes up during a flash flood. The corpse turned out to be Tassy Glover, wife of local bar owner Tom Glover. Until then, local rumor suggested that Tassy had run off with a movie actor.

Forget the knitting needles, Ben-Gay for aching joints and rocker! Naturally nosy Millet becomes embroiled-quite by accident, you understand-in the dangerous shenanigans happening around her and chooses a hands-on approach to solving Tassy's murder. Millet convinces friend Judy Hark to join her on the quest; together, they recruit help from a cast of locals.

From this joint effort springs the death of local tyrant Del Morechurch, two offbeat Texan funerals, a sniper firing bullets at rafts filled with tourists and much more. The only thing I disliked about reading TERLINGUA ALE was that the novel gave me a strong craving for Tex-Mex food and, of course, beer!

-- Karen Kavanagh, avid reader and 2003-2004 Co-president of Sisters in Crime-Central Coast Chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put this book down!, December 28, 2004
This review is from: Terlingua Ale (Paperback)
I had planned to read TERLINGUA ALE after the New Year. Deciding to sample the first few pages in late December, just to see what the book was like, I found myself reading the words "THE END" much too soon a few days later. TERLINGUA ALE is such a colorful, fast-moving ride, I couldn't set the book aside until I had finished it. Once I had completed the book, however, I found myself disappointed that it was over. I now eagerly await the next installment in Margaret Searles' fantastic series!

The main characters, Margaret Millet and Judy Hark, are two supposedly elderly ladies ... although you would never know it by their active, open-minded, inquisitive lives, not to mention their penchant for solving murder mysteries!

As the reader accompanies these ladies throughout their daily lives in the "Back of Beyond," in an RV Park on the Rio Grande River, the reader is treated to the sights, sounds, and foods of the region. Margaret Searles describes her characters so well, the reader is left with the impression that he or she personally knows the residents who inhabit this region. TERLINGUA ALE delights the senses while challenging the mind with a well-written, fast-paced but gradually unfolding murder mystery.

Now a fan of the "Mrs. Millet and Mrs. Hark Mystery" series, I eagerly await the next book!
