5.0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Gem! May 6, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you check out my other reviews, then you will find that I always give 5 stars. It isn't that I overrate everything. Rather, I can only get inspired to write about music that I really love (and I buy a lot of CDs that don't get reviewed). Terra Incogdita by Age of Nemesis is very much worth writing about. A concept album with strong vocals and excellent instrumental playing, Terra Incogdita has everything that a true fan of progressive metal is looking for. Apparently first recorded in Magyar, the lyrics were translated to English causing this version to be released after Psychogeist. Psychogeist is great, but Terra Incogdita is even better.

Age of Nemesis are from Hungary. Their guitarist, Zoltan Fabian, appears to be the brainchild behind their material, which is usually quite heavy but possesses softer moments. Fabian also is a great player with a somewhat retro distorted sound, reminiscent of Tony Iommi. This may sound a bit little strange, but his sound combines quite well with the more modern sounding keyboards, creating nice differentiation between both instruments. Vocalist, Zoltan Kiss, is very competent, handling the English lyrics very well. Being a concept album, there is a definite flow from song to song, creating a continuum of music. One high point for me is The Land of Light, which contains some nice keys and acoustic guitar which is intermittently shattered with Fabian's crunch. The other peak moment is Plummeting into Eternity, possessing a lengthy and intoxicating jam intro, super hooks and chorus, and screaming guitar and keyboard solos as an outro. Plummeting into Eternity rises to the description of magnum opus.

I love what the internet has done for music. Without it, bands like Age of Nemesis and albums like Terra Incogdita would never find their way into my CD player. Terra Incogdita - try it, you'll like it!

Hungarian band Age of Nemesis salled forth in 2007 with this disc of what is probably best termed Prog Metal. The playing is full bodied and tight and you can actually tell a lot about what you are getting simply from the song titles and durations. Having said that it would be wrong to assume that the only thing 'prog' in nature on this release is time changes etc. There are mellow sections to songs and in fact two of the more interesting songs to my mind were the very short pieces. There is a lot of introspection to be found here.

Other things to be found on this album? Well the songs stand on their own. There is a concept apparently but truth to tell I've never bothered to figure out what it was. Because it just doesn't matter. The songs are fine on their own, some of the longer ones becoming mini-suites of their own. Some aspects of it are a little paint by numbers but if you have a hankering for this sort of thing you'll probably find it easy to forgive them. There is only one instrumental here, the vocals are nicely incorporated into the music (neither side dominates IMHO) and at well over an hour mark you are getting your moneys worth.

Production wise things are fine and it sounds like a lot of care went into getting the most out of the budget available. The digipack format I have isn't terribly to my taste - though the album comes with a link to where you can score a 16 page booket if that is your fancy. It also allows you access to five more MP3 format cover songs the band have done (which I did not listen to at the time of writing). So if you groove to this thing the band have made it possible for you to get your hands on more of the same. Neat.
