5.0 out of 5 stars Much brighter than anticipated
I purchased this from another vendor to replace the factory bulb in a MagLite I've owned for years and have replaced probably 3 standard bulbs along the way. The amount of light and ability to focus the beam is amazing. When the manufacturer says not to look into the beam of light, they aren't joking. I purchased this from another vendor to replace the factory bulb in a MagLite I've owned for years and have replaced probably 3 standard bulbs along the way. The amount of light and ability to focus the beam is amazing. When the manufacturer says not to look into the beam of light, they aren't joking. I haven't had this for long so I'm not sure how long the LED will last, only going by what the manufacturer says. So it should be many years. I did try some junky NiMH rechargable D size batteries from Ray O Vac with this LED and 2-D MagLite. They lasted about 30 minutes fully charged before flickering the LED and finally shutting down. (Note that it doesn't dim, just shuts down when batteries are low). I'm guessing I'll get a lot more time with regular alkaline batteries though since I've read, and seem to be experiencing, that the Ray O Vac NiMH D batteries have a low capacity C type battery inside the D casing... cute. Anyway, I'm hooked on this upgrade. If the cost was a little less I'd be even happier, but considering the light output the cost made it worth it for me. I have read that these LEDs can also heat up pretty good and fog the inside of a Mag when used for longer periods and in certain weather. I haven't experienced this yet, haven't tested it that far yet. That may be in the larger 4-6 cell flashlights also?

I am using this with a 3 D cell compare the original with the Terralux. I have had these batteries in the flashlight for awhile so this may not even be full power

These are the contenders:

TerraLUX TLE-6EXB MiniStar5 140 Lumens Extreme LED Replacement Bulb for 2-3 C&D Cell MagLites
TerraLUX TLE-1F MiniStar1 1-Watt Flange Base LED Replacement Bulb for Use in 2-6 Cell C/D Maglite Flashlight

I had the sad task of sorting through the possessions of my late father. I found some really old flashlights that date back to my childhood, and are worth nothing more than the trash or a charitable contribution. However, these are of great emotional value, so I got these 2 LED replacement bulbs, trying to make them usable.

The current item has one rather significant problem: the barrel is significantly fatter than a standard PR bulb, so it may not fit in a random flashlight. It fit in one of the old torches, but not in the other 2. It depends on how the bulb is held in place.

When I compared the light beam of the 2, there was virtually no difference. I know that the current item has a higher lumen rating than the 1F, but there was virtually no difference in the light from the 2. This one had a rather warm, pinkish hue, whereas the 1F had a rather distinct, icky green tinge. Other than that, the differences between the 2 were slight.

Both, however, were way better than the crappy PR bulb that were in them when I found them. Both are important upgrades, and I recommend both.
But I vote for the other 1F, since it is cheaper. If you are trying to rejuvenate an old, valuable flashlight, then the 1F is your item. However, since the equivalent LED one from Maglite is only a few bucks more, I recommend you fugeddaboutit and get MAGLITE ST2D016 2-D Cell LED Flashlight, Black instead.

Another side note: the current item 6EXB only works in 2 or 3 battery flashlights, whereas the 1F works in any flashlight that works on 2 up to 6 batteries.

I bought two of these LED bulbs to replace the incandescent bulbs in my 2-cel D Maglites. They work great: bright, white light, MUCH brighter than the old bulbs. Terrific upgrade.

There is a lot of confusing information to be found in the reviews of this item. Here are the facts:
1) These bulbs are MUCH brighter and whiter than the stock incandescent bulbs. Huge improvement.
2) At about $13, these are MUCH cheaper than the price of a new LED Maglite.
3) If you already own a non-LED Maglite, this is a relatively cheap upgrade.
4) I'm not sure how this LED compares to the Maglite LED in terms of brightness, but I can say this is bright. Much brighter than the incandescent bulb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got a Maglite? THIS bulb is the one to get!, January 5, 2012

Real simple here, if you have a 2 or 3 D cell incandescent Maglite, this is the LED bulb to convert it to. It takes all of 30 seconds to take out the old and put in this new one. Let me be clear, this bulb puts out EXTREMELY BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT!
It is not yellow in any way and the bulb still allows focusing for up close up and pinpoint distance.
To show how much less power this bulb uses over the standard bulb, the batteries I had in the flashlight would not light up the old bulb. I put this LED bulb in and it was like I had fresh batteries.
Do not listen to the negative reviews about this particular bulb, I'm not usually one to take time to review a product but after reading some negative reviews about this bulb, I must disagree. This thing makes my 2-Dcell Mag work like a floodlight. What a bargain.

Whoever rated this at 140 lumens must have had it hooked to a nuclear reactor. I have other lights that are rated at 140 lumens and this one didn't come close. This was used in a 3 cell Maglite and did make quite an improvement over the regular filament bulb, but not as advertised.. I pity the poor person who uses it in a 2 cell.

2.0 out of 5 stars A lackluster replacement for the incandescent bulb., June 17, 2011

This review is from: TerraLUX TLE-6EXB MiniStar5 140 Lumens Extreme LED Replacement Bulb for 2-3 C&D Cell MagLites (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought 2 of these to upgrade 2 older Maglite 3D flashlights to LEDs. These upgrades advertise 140 lumen, bright white light. THEY'RE NOT!! They are a yellowish light more like the old original incandescent bulbs, though somewhat brighter. But, they are nowhere near 140 lumen. I have a 104 lumen Maglite XL50 that is much brighter and whiter.

If they last a long time and if they extend battery life 6 times as advertised (I'm skeptical) then they would be a reasonable bulb alternative for people with non-LED Maglites like me. But, if you are expecting something that is comparable to a Maglite LED, either original or newer, brighter, FORGET IT.

Beats throwing away a good light that is obsolete with the halogen bulb in it. LED breathes new life into the maglight. You can still focus the beam with the LED installed.

This bulb is bright but no way is it 140 lumen. I compared it to a Mag from factory LED bulb rated at 120 lumen and it was brighter than this kit.

2.0 out of 5 stars spend an extra $4 and get the led maglite, January 10, 2011

I bought this as an upgrade for a several year old 3-d maglite. I had a chance to compare it to a new 2-D LED maglite and here's what I found.
Pro:
It is brighter than the stock bulb and seems to last longer though I'm still on the first set of batteries so I can't say by how much.
con:
currently a brand new LED 3-D maglite is $4 dollars more than this upgrade and produces more light. Also the Factory LED maglite comes with an updated reflector which allows for better control of the beam focus.
conclusion:
spend the extra couple of bucks to get an entire new flashlight and give your old one to a friend/loved one.
